Forest Park 80-mile Challenge, Hike #2

WHEN: Wednesday, Feb 19, 2014

TIME: 11:00 am

WHERE: Leif Erikson Dr Trailhead on Germantown Rd

TOTAL MILES: 7 miles

ELEVATION GAIN: 1,851 ft

PACE: 3.0 mph

DIFFICULTY RATING: Strenuous

ESTIMATED HIKING TIME: 3 hours

PERMITS: None required

Several of us have goals this year of completing the ALL TRAILS CHALLENGE which means we will be hiking all 80 miles of trails in Forest Park. I will be designing routes that will help us accomplish that goal. Because not all of the trails can be done as an independent loop it will require hiking more than those 80 miles to complete the entire challenge.

THIS IS NOT AN EASY HIKE! Don't let the 7 mile distance on this hike fool you as it is a tough one due to the steepness and condition of the trails. The book lists this hike as being “strenuous”. We will meet at the Leif Erikson Trailhead on Germantown Rd and will be hiking Newton Rd, Wildwood Trail, Firelanes 9 and 10, Cannon Trail, and Linnton Trail but not necessarily in that order. I will add a turn by turn description within the next day or two for those who might want to do this hike on their own.

This is Portland so expect rain and mud and an occasional flooded creek crossing. Wear waterproof or water resistant hiking boots and bring your trekking poles. Wear lots of adjustable layers as you'll be hot on the way up and cold on the way down. Bring lunch. You may think you don't need lunch on such a short hike but when you are standing their drooling as the rest of us are eating, don't say I didn't tell you so! There is no water along the route so bring lots to drink.

To reach the trailhead from downtown Portland, take Hwy 30 (St Helens Rd) for 7.2 miles from it's intersection with I-405. Continue past the St. Johns Bridge and turn left at the traffic light immediately after the bridge. This is NW Bridge Ave and the northern ramp to the bridge. Take the first right onto NW Germantown Rd and follow it for 1.3 miles to a large parking area on the left, which marks the end of Leif Erikson Drive.

Please remember that I'm merely a volunteer inviting others to join in on a hike. I'm not a professional guide nor do I receive any compensation. I must insist that everybody be responsible for their own safety and well-being.

It might be tonight before I get a chance to post the pics of the hike but I'm working on it. Too much time hiking and not enough time left over for sitting at the computer!

I guess everyone has their definition. But it's hail as I've always known it.

This was my first winter hike, and I am also glad to be hiking the 80-mile Challenge with this group. Thanks, Severt, for organizing this challenge.

Very interesting, Isaac. Remember the old saying, "Things are exciting as long as they are new. Once they become routine, they becoming boring."

I don't use MapQuest, Carol, but on Google Maps if you type in NW Germantown Rd & Lilac Ave you'll see the general area and if you zoom in you'll see Leif Erikson Dr.

Keith, unfortunately, trailhead do not have street addresses but if you plug in NW Germantown Rd & Lilac Ave in Google Maps and then zoom in just a little bit you'll see Leif Erikson on the map and see where it meets with Germantown Rd

A friend of mine would like to join also. Her name is Susan and I expect that she will sign up shortly. There may also be another woman who would like to join and we will pass the information on to her.
