backpacking. Simple, peaceful, safeish, and awesome.
The wonderland of rocks "trail" in Joshua Tree National Park. It's a big rock scramble over, under, and between the coolest big rocks you've ever seen. My hands were raw from the coarse granite by the end, but I loved it.
The huts at Ecola State Park. A few miles' walk in and a few bucks gets you a roof, slats to make your bed on, dry firewood, and a great viewpoint. Everything you need, nothing you don't.
