Nerd Nite is a monthly event that strives for an inebriated, salacious, yet deeply academic vibe. We aim to entertain, educate, elucidate, enlighten, and other things that start with “e.” Come drink along with us!

When: Tuesday, September 10, 2013, doors at 6:00pm, event at 7:00pm
Where: Mission Theater, 1624 NW Glisan, Portland
Cost: $8.00* suggested cover at the door

This Nerd Nite will feature the following two talks:

What a Nightmare! The Truth About the Scary, Disturbing, and Just Plain Weird Dreams
Have you ever woken from a dream and wondered, “What was THAT about?” Our nightly dreams may frighten us, reassure us, or baffle us, but what do they actually mean? Come venture boldly into the territory of the unconscious! Jennifer Wohl, a psychotherapist in private practice who works frequently with dreams, will help us explore the wacky symbol-language of the dream world, and you’ll go home with some fresh, new ways of thinking about your nightly dreams.

Learning and Memory: How Aging, Drinking, and Chemotherapy Mess With Your Mind
The old idea that our brains cannot regenerate and form new nerve cells has been challenged in recent years. Learning and memory require the formation of new neurons and this process is affected by aging as well as a number of chemical insults to our brains. Dr. Larry Sherman, a Senior Scientist in the Division of Neuroscientist at OHSU, will discuss some of the latest research on this subject including research from his own lab that suggest ways to protect the brain from processes that limit learning and memory.

*A note on the suggested cover: Nerd Nite is completely supported by money collected at the door. We are committed to offering education opportunities to adults who want to learn, so if $8 is a hardship for you, please come anyway and donate what you can.
