Boulder Ridge Viepoint

4.6 miles round trip to viewpoint; option of longer trip (see below)
1400' elevation change
Driving time from Portland: slightly under 1 hour

From the trailhead in the Wildwood Recreation area, we'll climb 2.3 miles up to Boulder Ridge to an impressive view across ZigZag Mountain to Mt. Hood. The trail starts out by crossing a 300' bridge over the "Wild & Scenic" Salmon River and then .3 mile through a mossy riverside forest.

I just joined the Xerces Society's dragonfly project last week and I'd like your help with exploring the wetland at the start of this hike for dragonflies--so we'll take 15-20 minutes on either end of this trip to watch quietly, photograph and otherwise record what we see--or don't see.

This is a change from the originally advertised trip to South Fork Mountain, but it keeps the same distance and elevation gain. If I can find a co-leader for the trip, some of us may go a bit further up Boulder Ridge--possibly even all the way to Huckleberry Mountain described here: http://www.portlandhikersfieldguide.org/wiki/Boulder_Ridge_to_Huckleberry_Mountain_Hike.

As is common on my hikes, share your knowledge of local natural or cultural history--so do some homework--e.g., find a plant list and look up some plants ahead of time; better yet, find an insect list for the area. I'll share mine too, so this trip will go at a moderate pace with stops for interpretation and photos.

Dogs are not allowed--except for service dogs. PLEASE READ About Mary's Trips in this Meetup's Files under "More" BEFORE you sign up. If you have a burning question, it is best to call Mary at[masked] (land line) with questions.

Dress in quick-drying layers--no jeans or other cotton. Bring lunch, water, rain gear, and the Updated Ten Essential "Systems" for safe hiking.

  1. Navigation (map and compass)
  2. Sun protection (sunglasses and sunscreen)
  3. Insulation (extra clothing)
  4. Illumination (headlamp/flashlight)
  5. First-aid supplies
  6. Fire (waterproof matches/lighter/candles)
  7. Repair kit and tools
  8. Nutrition (extra food)
  9. Hydration (extra water)
  10. Emergency shelter

Consider bringing binoculars for bird-watching. Bring money for drivers, $2-3 voluntary donation for Sierra Club's Leader Training program and money for an optional stop on the way home. It's about an 80 mi. RT from Portland, so expect to pay about $8.00/person to your driver.

Great group! Sunny weather with snatches of fall color! Many dragonflies out for those of us who stayed! We went a little farther than intended because they moved the wilderness sign to the beginning of the trailhead, so we didn't have our anticipated bearing point.

Mary, Two things: My friend, Nadine, can come, so please add one to the count. I can give you a ride, too. I'm also giving her a ride from 44th and Division, so I will need to pick you up by about 7:30. Is that OK?

I'll be there at 7:15. See you then!

Hi Mary, Viewing the dragonflies sounds fun to me. But I doubt I'll be able to hike more than 3 miles up due to the elevation. I would be happy to wait @ 3 miles if other people wanted to hike another mile. Sue

Sue, 4.6 is the roundtrip total. We only hike up 2.3 mi. I did not find a co-leader.

Hi Mary, when RSVP opens, I will attend. I had enjoyed so much on my first hike with you, got to do it again. I think I still have time to get more gears so that I will be more equipped.

Mary, thanks for remembering me. I sign up a hike on Saturday; so I can't do Sunday. I haven't been to church for a while so I better not do too much at once. I will keep my eyes on your hikes though. I am sure I will do more on your hikes

If anyone is coming in the Sunset Highway, I'd love to meet you at the Market Street exit ramp for a ride to Gateway. This is a nearly immediate off and back on to Hwy 405 as I can be at SW 13th & Market.

Will it be much more difficult? 4.6 mi vs 7-8 mi and much more elevation gain...

Hello folks! I'd like your permission to change this hike to one whose trailhead is a similar distance away. I'm thinking about Boulder Ridge on the way to Huckleberry Mountain--maybe not the whole way to the peak, rather a 7-8 mile hike, rather than the full 11 mile hike described here: http://www.portlandhikersfieldguide.org/wiki/Boulder_Ridge_to_Huckleberry_Mountain_Hike. I'd like your help with exploring the wetland at the start of this hike for dragonflies as I just joined the Xerces Society's dragonfly project last week. Let me know if this would change your decision to go.
