Carmenere, the signature varietal of Chile is really making a name for itself in the wine world. Big spreads in all the wine magazines, top sommeliers putting it on their lists and a general buzz. Carmenere is the hottest new red of 2014. So let's decide for ourselves whether there is anything to this hype.

Carmenere is from The Graves and Medoc in Bordeaux. It is one of the 6 grapes officially allowed in Bordeaux wines. (The Bordeaux 6 - Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Carmenere)

In Bordeaux in the late 1800's most Carmenere was wiped out due to the Phylloxera aphid. Unlike the other Bordeaux varietals Carmenere was not replanted on American rootstock because of the difficulties in growing it.

For it to grow right in Bordeaux, it needs perfect conditions. The grape is subject to Shatter or Coulur (where the grapes flower but do not set fruit due to wet spring weather common in Bordeaux). It is also less mold resistant than the other Bordeaux varietals.

So after phylloxera wiped out their vines, Carmenere was left out of the replanting. They said Carmenere .. ugh! screw that high maintenace bitch!

Luckily though it was planted with Merlot in Chile during the 1800s. In fact in Chile, it was thought to be Merlot and classified as Merlot until the early 90's. The areas in Chile where it was planted are dryer, high altitude places where Carmenere can thrive.
