  • May 18, 2013 · 7:00 AM

Trip Leader: Wallace Harvey

Trip Date: Saturday, May 18, 2013

This float will be on the South Fork of the Shenandoah. For this trip, plan to meet at 7:00 in the morning at the Newport put in. Wallace suggests everyone who is interested can meet for dinner after the float and will pick somewhere in Luray. Everyone is responsible for paying for their own dinner

Directions: From NOVA take 66 West toward Front Royal. Take exit 13 Linden/Front Royal. At the bottom of exit, turn left and go 2/10 of a mile and turn right onto route 55. You will be on 55 for approximately 5 miles and then will turn left on 340 South. Stay on 340 until you get to Luray. For the rest of the directions, Google Virginia game and Inland Fisheries: Follow these steps. 1. Fishing 2. River and Stream 3. Shenandoah River South Fork 4. Maps and Accesses 5. Newport to Alma

Link provided below: Again, we will meet at the put at 7:00 a.m. If you are not there at that time, he will assume you are not coming. Remember to dress accordingly and be prepared for rain. Approximate travel time from Tysons Corner is 1 hour 55 minutes.

First time on that stretch of the South Fork. Looking forward to fishing it again later this summer.

Thanks again for leading the trip, Wallace!

Awesome trip. My first in a kayak. Met some great guys. Caught some fish. Didn't flip. Life is good!

Bryan, here are some essentials to bring:
    - PDF
    - Knife you can reach easily
    - Rain gear (just in case)
    - Plenty of drinking water
    - Sunscreen
    - Rope (15' or so)
    - Food
    - Dry bag
    - Sunglasses (and a leash for them)
    - Forceps or needle-nose pliers for hook removal

Are you planning on just fly fishing, or will you have a spinning rod/reel too? I just have spinning gear, and usually use a mix of soft plastics (tubes, Senkos and flukes), a couple spinnerbaits, and a few topwater baits like Torpedoes or buzzbaits.
