Club sponsored float trip. Meet at Swains Lock parking lot at 6:30 AM.We will plan to be at the takeout at 3:00 PM unless weather conditions or other factors cause a change. At minimum we will have two two-way radios on the water to stay in touch in case there needs to be a change in plans.
To get to Swains, take River Road west from the Capital Beltway about 5.5 miles. Turn left on Swains Lock road. We will leave at least one vehicle at Swains and shuttle the boats up to Pennyfield Lock. Note that the map shows the put-in at Pennyfield, not the meeting place, which is Swains. Post a question if you have any confusion about the meeting time and place.
There are two ways to do this trip from Pennyfield. We can head immediately down river and stay on the MD side of Watkins Island, or we can paddle upriver 3/4 mile and across the the VA side. Both offer good fishing. VA side is a little tricky to get back to the takeout but not a problem with someone who is familiar with the location. We can discuss this Saturday AM. MD side features a "water slide" chute to descend the WSSC dam near the end of the trip. This chute can be taken in the boat or lined if you are not comfortable riding it. VA side is my preference, however I'll go with what the group prefers.
