Minutes from first Meetup of 2013 - Jan 23

Bala D.
Group Organizer
Ann Arbor, MI
Post #: 11
1/23/12 Minutes Thanks, Paul!

The group agreed that we should select May as the month to wrap up the Titanic Kaggle competition project.
The group agreed that it is worthwhile to have a workshop in mid February to focus on the Titanic Project. Anne Dwyer will try to see if a meeting space is available at Oakland University’s Kresge Library Café. Paul will send out a poll to gauge interest.
Paul Kitko has asked Neil McGuigan (Data mining expert in RapidMiner from Vancouver, Canada) to give us a virtual talk via Fuze. Neil has agreed. More to come on scheduling.
Bala is taking a course in Data Analysis in R from He recommends the course to those of you wanting to get to know R…and it’s free!
Anne Dwyer gave a talk on Sage Notebook which is a scientific programming IDE. She demonstrated a Python program she developed that runs a Support Vector Machine on the Titanic data.
Sage Notebook runs on LINUX – Anne had to install a UNIX emulator (called Virtual Box https://www.virtualbo...) on her Windows laptop to run UNIX.
Bala suggested that the group join an online course as a team and then complete the assignments together. It may encourage some of us to make the time commitment to complete the training.

We discussed a few more meeting logistics topics including:
-Annual fees – We are going to collect donations to sustain the group moving forward. New members can attend two meeting before deciding to becoming a member and making their donation.
-Donations are discretionary. $20 is the suggested annual membership donation. A donation roster will be made available via
-Bala recommended holding some future meetings at lunch time – Paul run a poll on for feedback.
-We agreed to have an agenda posted before all future meetings.
-There will always be a meeting held regardless of the number of attendees that say they will attend via
-We may hold future meetings via a conference application called Fuze. It will give members the opportunity to attend meetings without traveling.
