"Product Management and Machine Learning: Notes from the Field"
Hélène Levert, Senior Product Manager at Zalando
Marta Skassa, Product Manager at Zalando

Hélène and Marta will share their firsthand experience of building machine learning-based products at Zalando. Marta has launched a product that recommends algorithmically created outfits, while Hélène has built several sizing products that help customers find the perfect size online.
Despite working in different teams, they observed similarities in their approach towards creating machine learning-based products and want to share their learnings with the product management community:
- The 4D framework for machine learning-based products - the importance of starting with the customer problem before building a machine learning solution
- The beauty of the “fake it till you make it” approach - how to test simple solutions before building the actual, full-blown product
- The product manager’s mindset shift - how to operate and plan in research-heavy environments
Hélène and Marta will also discuss some open questions, such as how to “fake” personalisation (especially in discovery or design phase) or how to provide customers with an accurate explanation why they receive a certain recommendation without overwhelming them.

"OKR - 3 Letters for effective Product Organisations"
Tim Herbig, Director of Iridion and Author of 'Lateral Leadership for Product Managers'

Using agile principles is an effective way to build great products, and there's no shortage of frameworks helping us to do just that. But all too often, we tend to focus on merely producing more output (aka features) more quickly without considering the actual impact our products need to have on our business and our user's behavior. We know that clarifying and connecting day-to-day actions with the higher reasoning behind our efforts is one of the most powerful ways to ensure that we build what truly matters. Therefore, we need an agile goal setting system like Objectives and Key Results (OKR) which not only helps product teams to focus on outcome over output but also enables true autonomy for them to build the best solutions.
In this talk, Tim will lay-out why you should set up your product organization to prioritize outcome over output using Objectives and Key Results and how to incorporate OKR into all levels of agile product management. Tim will reflect on his personal experiences from being part of broken OKR systems and share the learnings from leading the introduction and execution of OKR himself.
