What we're about

ProductTank Birmingham provides an opportunity for product people in Birmingham and surrounding areas to exchange ideas and experiences about Product Design, Development and Management, Business Modelling, Metrics, User Experience and all the other things that get us excited.

Events include talks from guest speakers as well as our community members on topics around building products and product management, networking opportunities, and a good old-fashioned chin-wag over a beer or two. We're open to companies big and small.

We're part of a wider, global product community. We encourage the community to get engaged by commenting on or writing new posts for the blog: http://www.mindtheproduct.com

Finally, check out our annual product conferences (https://www.mindtheproduct.com/2018/10/mind-product-conferences/).

If Building a Great Team is the Problem, Technology is not the Answer

We are pleased to welcome TESSA COOPER, previously from FutureLearn THE SPEAKER: With over 10 years experience of leading and developing product teams across FutureLearn, The Guardian and Comic Relief, Tess is adept at understanding people and team dynamics. This, alongside her passion for diversity & inclusion issues, lead her to move from product management to becoming Director of People and Culture in her most recent role. She has recently left FutureLearn to pursue a freelance career in helping a wider range of companies and non-profit communities to build inclusive teams where individuals are empowered to be the best they can be. www.tessacooper.com Twitter - @tessacooper5 THE TALK: Technology should free humans up to use their brains more creatively and efficiently by taking repetitive tasks away from us. However, many product teams forget this when it comes to our own ways of working; whether it’s spending half our time in emails instead of chatting face to face, or using endless tools to monitor projects and progress rather than just cracking on. We forget to reflect on why we use technology and whether it truly enables us to be the best team we can be. This talk will explore how to build a great team through focussing on people rather than technology and how challenging our over-reliance on technology to solve problems can help maximise your team’s capabilities. SCHEDULE: 18:30 - Registration Starts 19:00 - Quick Intro about ProductTank & a few words from the location host. 19:10 - Speaker talk 19:50 - Q&A, Networking 21:00/21:30 - Close Depending on how we feel, continue conversation at nearest watering hole. OUR HOST & SPONSORS: We are kindly being hosted by our friends at VoxPopMe.

Why do products fail?

Talis

We are pleased to welcome DAVID MAIDMENT, CTO of WONDR. THE TALK: With all the best intentions, software projects often fail. And when they fail, systemic blame can quickly emerge to explain why such a simple plan failed so spectacularly. We hear things like, "It wasn't my fault; Bob can't follow a brief." And we may even believe it. In this session, we'll explore some common pain points for cross-discipline product teams attempting to work together, and what individuals can do to make a difference. THE SPEAKER: David is a career software developer, currently working as CTO at WONDR. He has worked in and managed development teams in startups and SMEs, both agency and in-house, and has dedicated much of his career to building software that helps teams to be more productive. https://www.linkedin.com/in/maidmentdavid/ SCHEDULE: 18:30 - Registration Starts 19:00 - Quick Intro about ProductTank & a few words from the location host. 19:10 - Speaker talk 19:50 - Q&A, Networking 21:00/21:30 - Close Depending on how we feel, continue conversation at nearest watering hole.
