ProductTank October

ProductTank October is all about using analytics in Product Management. Three great speakers curated by Marc Abraham will share their experience on using analytics effectively in Product Management.

We are back in the heart of Shoreditch, at Central Foundation Boy's School on Cowper Street. Right next to Old Street tube station.

Speakers

Lee Duddell | Founder & Head of UX, WhatUsersDo

Based on his experience, Lee will talk about some of the potential pitfalls of using analytics and alternative ways to generate customer insight. He will argue that organisations should ditch the data-driven term and become insight-driven.

Jo Binding | Former General Manager, Strategy & Product Development, BT Sport

Jo will be talking about her experiences of taking ideas from crazy pub conversations to launched products. Jo will cover off the analytics that were involved in the launch of these new products.

Alex Smith | Site Development Manager, Charles Tyrwhitt

The A/B and multivariate testing programme at Charles Tyrwhitt; what we measure at Charles Tyrwhitt and how the test results feed back into optimisation of the website. Subsequently are there any tradeoffs between data driven design and securing the best user experience?

LinkedIn

Registration will start at 6:30pm, with the first presenter beginning at 7:30pm.

Finally we will have the usual networking over drinks before we repair to a nearby pub for more drinks around 9:30pm!

I have to agree. The meet up provoked thoughts as always but lacked real meat in terms of real lessons learned.

Although I certainly took away some interesting points to think about and apply to our product development, the presentations this time generally weren't along the lines I was expecting for the topic "Analytics" which seemed to be mentioned as a secondary topic in all 3 presentations. Still good to hear other people's experiences and points of view though.

I enjoyed yesterdays meetup, I think the message I took away which was being put across is that you shouldn't be totally data driven. Given the time that was available I think it was covered well. Jo Binding had lots of great experience but zipped through her slides so it would be nice to have follow up material from the speakers... however there is always linkedIn for that. I have spread the word at work with others and the ProductTank is going into this weeks Product Development newsletter here, I have also asked for the Bham session to be plugged as we have offices in Coventry so I hope that’s a success too!

Well-organised, though a break mid-talks might be a better format

Within each presentation tonight there were some golden nuggets. Don't forget to brainstorm before, after and during your development to get feedback. Analytics is important but insight is crucial for success. And, don't throw away those failed quirky products as they maybe worth a fortune on ebay in years to come.

Thanks to the speakers for sharing their analytics views today. If you all allow me I'd like to disagree, probably a lot with Lee and a bit with Alex. The reason being, I don't believe in quan or qual separately. Lee indicated that big data is incomplete and to a point I might agree with it, but I still think big data is really useful, and I see its problems having more to do with organisations looking at it into silos, not asking the right questions to it and not being able to see the right insights that would send them digging for the important 'whys' they need to answer with qual research. Lou Rosenfeld presents it beautifully and much better than me. If you don't mind me I'd like to share it with you. He argues the cure to this is the right balance of qual and quan used in combination:
