ProductTank November

ProductTank November is all about our connected world of things. We are now living in a world where the web has spilled beyond the screen and into the physical world: connected devices are becoming commonplace and the smart home is now a reality. But what challenges does the Internet of Things bring from a design and product management perspective?

This evening's speakers, curated by Alison Austin, will share their experiences of developing products for this brave new world.

Alexandra Deschamps-Sonsino | Product & interaction designer. Entrepreneur. Founder of the Good Night Lamp. Former Co-Founder and CEO of Tinker London. Organiser of the Internet of Things meetup in London.

Alexandra will talk about how the Internet of Things has emerged from the maker movement and not the design community. She will discuss the influence of software development, the importance of hardware hacking tools, spaces and communities that have led to the burgeoning transformation of a traditional industrial landscape driven by defunct approaches to product development.

Claire Rowland | UX strategist, design manager and researcher with a particular interest in experience design for the Internet of Things. She's currently the service design manager for, a connected home platform provider and writing a book for O'Reilly on UX design for the Internet of Things.

Claire will talk about how the Internet of Things is still a heavily technology driven field, where many of the products and services are still mostly of interest to early adopters. She will discuss how, as the technology matures, understanding how to create compelling and usable everyday products for mass market users will be crucial. What might make a good IoT product and UX?

Alex Jones | Business Design Consultant at Fjord, working with clients to apply the principles of human-centred design to strategic business problems. Formally, as a Product Manager at British Gas Connected Homes (the organisation's corporate startup) and Business Consultant at Detica, Alex has 10 years experience helping big companies use new technology to grow their businesses. Alex is passionate about all things connected and the intersection between business, technology & design.

Based on his experience, Alex will be talking about the role of Product Management in a world where devices are cheap and everything's connected.

Excellent meetup, my first at Product Tank and I'll definitely be going to more. Special thanks to the organizers for making it seem effortless -- I know that running a meetup takes a lot of effort (and mine is 1/10th the size).

Back to work... I have strange desire to start putting sensors in our sofabeds & armchairs. ("Beep! While you were watching tv all night, you ate junk food and gained .2kg -- now get your lazy bones up and take a walk! Beep!)

Very interesting this month, Alex thanks for the analogy of the F1 pit crew, going to adapt it before I share. Some pit crews are better than others so going to highlight the possible reasons why. Look forward to next months meetup, mince pies?

Yes; some of session content was good. Shamefully I own (and use) lots of Apple App-enabled connected "products" including those cited: Philips Hue, Withings (connected scales and activity monitor), Koubanchi (plant monitor), LightwaveRF (energy monitor) and Heatmiser (heating control). They all have different UX and UI and are more or less poor implementations of "product design" - surprisingly (or perhaps not) Philips Hue is a great physical product but a very poor App experience, whereas Withings products are great and their Apps are reasonable (8/10). What I really would like to see is a Code of Ethics for Product Managers (as mentioned in closing, like BCS' CITP) but also a Guild of Product Design that produces a set of UX and design best practices for "connected products" as well as an Open Standard for connectivity (beyond what BLE may stipulate) so that end-users can expect a common set of values and experiences from all connected products (that meet the kite-mark).

And finally, I would love t
