San Francisco Rising

One Billion Rising is a worldwide event to end violence against women. It was initiated by Eve Ensler and there are now happenings in almost all countries scheduled on February 14th, 2013. There are lots of events in the Bay Area - from a dance across the Golden Gate Bridge to several evening dance parties - and I am suggesting this one because it is likely to be the most visible in the Bay Area.

Location: SF City Hall (Polk Street between Grove & McAllister Streets)

Some other options for rising (please use the links for more info):

Here are the details from the event page on Facebook and also at OBR-SF:

One in three women on the planet will be raped or beaten in her lifetime.
One billion women violated is an atrocity.
One billion women dancing is a revolution.

On V-Day’s 15th Anniversary we are inviting ONE BILLION women and those who love them to WALK OUT, DANCE, RISE UP, and DEMAND an end to this violence.

Join Mayor Edwin M. Lee, District Attorney George Gascón, Board of Supervisors President David Chiu, V-Day and ONE BILLION RISING on Thursday, February 14th and SAY NO to violence against women and girls.

DJ’s spinning. Flash mobs dancing, and Special Guests to be announced!

ALL of San Francisco will come together on this day to show our commitment to ending violence against women.

What does ONE BILLION look like?

On February 14th, 2013, it will look like a REVOLUTION.

If you want to be part of OBR and this particular event doesn't work for you - either because of timing or location - please check at www.onebillionrising.org for lots of other options. If you want to be part of the flashmob, please see www.herrising.org for more info.

Thanks again for letting me know about (and organizing) this fantastic meetup. Though I was only able to attend the last 1/2 hour or so, it was such an energized and empowering gathering that I felt quite elated. I'm sorry not everyone was able to link up but I enjoyed meeting you and Danielle and having dinner afterwards with you both was great.

I heard the even was much bigger in other cities, so I am happy that it was a success overall. and every body contributed to this global movement.. we were all together in one way or another..

hi all.. i didn't see anyone there either, but i did hang out for about an hour.. it was great to be a part of something so important; but truth be told, i felt pretty awful the whole time was there.. perhaps it was in my head, but i felt like i was looked at somewhat accusingly (like i should be doing penance for something).. it was a really odd feeling.. at any rate, i'm glad i went and i will certainly go add my voice the next time around.. sorry i missed you all!

Oh, sorry you felt this uncomfortable, Alex! I wish we would've connected maybe that would have helped... Thank you for sticking it out anyways!

The more I think about it, the more I think it was just the emotions of being there that made me feel that way. You can't see a woman dressed in white holding u a sign that says "I'm standing up for those who have died to gang rape." and not feel guilty about being the same sex and having the same inherent capability as those who could commit such an unforgiveable crime. If I was getting looked at funny, maybe it was just the shock, disappointment, anger and fear that played out on my face and body language. In the end though, it really doesn't matter. I went there for women who've been hurt, not for me. Thank you for organizing this, Rachel. I never would have known about it otherwise.

thanks so much for organizing, rachel. it was a delight to meet you. hope to see you again soon. sorry i had to leave early, should have told you in advance. Any report on the rest of the festivities? And daniele, glad you found us!

On no worries, Ginny, for leaving early! I am still grateful that you showed up when i was on the corner by myself :-) . After you left, we did Break the Chain a couple of times, the Mayor talked us through a pledge to end VaW, and somewhere in between a couple of guys held up signs that said "mayor Lee = patriarchy" in the crowd on the steps. Oh! And a poet read a powerful poem by Eve Ensler - not sure if you were still there for that...

well, the instructions i saw said that rachel would be at corner of grove and polk until 3:55pm, wearing an orange t-shirt. i got there about 5-10 minutes late, but spotted the orange t-shirt w/ rachel in it not too far from that corner...sorry some of you missed us. we missed you too.

    February 13, 2013

Nora: I apologize for not seeing this comment until just now! I hope you joined the event anyways!

I'll be wearing a bright orange OBR t-shirt and possibly a bright red sweat jacket with the OBR logo on the back (the subscript will be in German in both, they had brighter colors there ;-) )

I think there might be a virtual one now, though you need access to Second Life (and it helps if you can read Italian...): http://www.onebillion...

I will be in SF but have time before the event to get across the bridge so will attend in Oaktown. Enjoy!

If it turns out that I have something happening nearby that night, I'll try to attend.

i just came back from a monster hike, so it remains to be seen how much my legs will want to dance tomorrow. i'd say there's a good bet i'll just end up being a spectator ;)

      February 9, 2013

    • Rachel

Ouch! Recover well, Daniele! I'll be a spectator, too, because i sprained my foot and it's not healing as fast as i want it, so i am making myself take a time out from dancing...

      February 10, 2013

  • Erika

I'd really like to come but won't make it till after 5 (as I work). Will it be possible to find you guys atter 5?

    February 9, 2013

    • Rachel

I'll email my phone number a couple days before the event, so you could call me to find out where we are. An alternative would be to go to a later event: There are a couple of dance events in SF and one in Oakland that start around 7. See www.onebillionrising.org (click on the little globe to find events near you).

I added the evening options i could find above :-)

I'm planning to attend, though I won't be there till 5pm. Will try to meet up with you all!

    February 4, 2013

    • Rachel

Thanks, Bridget! I'll send out my cell closer to the event so you can find us... :-)

      February 5, 2013

  • Rachel

Let's figure out a few days before the event when & where we want to meet. I might also be part of the flash mob, so i'd want to coordinate with that as well...
