• DARSHAN 8: The Supreme Array Scripture: A Psychedelic Sūtra

This event features a talk at the New School University by DOUGLAS OSTO PhD, followed by a group field trip to the Rubin Museum of Art. “I have not come across a canonical text that can approach the psychedelic majesty of the Avatamsaka Sutra, whose infinite details and ceaseless lists capture both the adamantine excess and fractal multiplicity of deep psychedelia.” -Erik Davis “All through the Avatamsaka Sutras there are references to infinitely jeweled Buddha-fields. Many who have tripped have seen them." -Alex Grey Dr. Osto (Altered States: Buddhism and Psychedelic Spirituality in America) will discuss the psychedelic nature of The Supreme Array Scripture (Gaṇḍavyūha Sūtra), and the potential implications of the text for the successful integration of psychedelics into a Buddhist spiritual path. Composed sometime around the third century C.E., The Gaṇḍavyūha Sūtra is the final chapter of the immense Flower Ornament Scripture (Avataṃsaka Sūtra)—one of the most psychedelic Mahāyāna sutras ever composed by Buddhists! After the talk, we will walk to the Rubin Museum of Art to receive DARSHAN as spiritual friends. We'll explore the exhibits, interact with the artwork, meditate in the Shrine room, and enjoy the vibes emanating from the K2 Lounge scene. From 6pm-10pm ther is free admission to the Rubin Museum and it is "K2 Friday Night" at the Café Seraito with DJ Johnny Scifo with special guest DJ Taz Rashid. Our aim is to cultivate a community-led peer integration circle that is non-hierarchical, non-judgmental, accessible, diverse, and educational. And we are committed to providing opportunities to learn the principles of harm reduction. Dr. Katherine MacLean is our facilitator-in-residence who will spearhead the first three GATHERINGS that will take place in the Assembly Hall at Judson Memorial Church starting August 1st, and then meeting monthly thereafter on a regular schedule. ______________ Katherine MacLean, PhD is a research scientist, teacher and meditator. Breathwork is an active form of meditation that uses a two-part breath to shift stuck emotional energy. This clearing out can happen in our physical self as well as in out belief systems. When we breathe consciously and with purpose- focusing all of our attention on that- it has the ability to bypass the thinking mind, allowing us to stay with the felt sense in the body. Because we aren’t engaged in defending, or blaming, or the other ways we shut down around our feelings- the breath is able partner with our nervous system, helping us to flush out some of the emotional bracing or baggage that we might be carrying. Shifting stuck emotional energy facilitates the release of strong emotions like anger and grief in their pure, felt form. Most people describe feeling softer, more spacious and less burdened. Who is Kathy Cherry? Kathy Cherry is a founding member of DharmaPunx NYC with almost two decades of dedicated mindfulness practice in the Insight Meditation tradition. Trained by Against the Stream Buddhist Meditation Community to teach the Buddha Dharma, she has also completed a 400 hour coaching certification through iPEC and is a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner in Training. Kathy teaches weekly vipassana and breathwork classes at DharmaPunx NYC and MNDFL, New York’s premier meditation studio, and is available for corporate and individual sessions geared towards embodiment, compassion and practical wisdom both on and off the cushion. Who is Allan Badiner? Allan Badiner is the editor of Zig Zag Zen: Buddhism and Psychedelics (Synergetic Press). He also edited the books, “Dharma Gaia: A Harvest in Buddhism and Ecology” and “Mindfulness in the Marketplace” (Parallax Press) and he is a contributing editor at Tricycle magazine. His written work appears in other books including “Dharma Family Treasures,” “Meeting the Buddha, “Ecological Responsibility: A Dialogue with Buddhism,” and “The Buddha and the Terrorist.” Allan holds a masters degree from the College of Buddhist Studies in LA and he has served on the board of Rainforest Action Network for 26 years. Allan believes the potential of psychedelics as an awakening to higher consciousness needs to be seen in an ecological context. • GATHERING: The Alchemy of Transforming Trauma with Dr. Katherine MacLean

    Judson Memorial Church

    $10.00

Psychedelic Sangha Presents, GATHERING: The Alchemy of Transforming Trauma with Dr. Katherine MacLean Most people have doubtlessly experienced some degree of trauma in their life. For Buddhists (who believe in rebirth) trauma is conceived in terms of multiple lifetimes! Karma and rebirth may seem to be unnecessary supernatural suppositions, but epigenetics suggest that the effects of intergenerational trauma are empirically real--thus making Buddhist psychology uniquely applicable. Katherine MacLean believes that intergenerational trauma can be transformed through the alchemy of Buddhist practice with psychedelics. A provocative claim that she substantiates through her own experience as both a psychedelic researcher and psychedelic Buddhist practitioner. Please join us for us for the inaugural GATHERING of Psychedelic Sangha, at Judson Memorial Church, with special guest Dr. Katherine MacLean. We will begin the evening with a special ceremony and blessing offered by Charles Lawrence, to mark the first Gathering at Judson Memorial Church. Katherine will then offer a psychedelic dharma talk and lead the sangha in a guided "RAFT" meditation (Remembering to be Aware of Feelings in your body and Trust your experience). Following the meditation, there will be plenty of time for sharing, reflection and discussion, before the ceremonial space is formally closed. More about Dr. Katherine MacLean: https://www.katherinemaclean.org DISCLAIMER: Psychedelic Sangha aims to create safe, communal spaces for Psychedelic Buddhists and Buddhistic Psychonauts. We also provide practical and intellectual pathways to harm reduction trainings through our event programing. We do not provide access to, distribute, or promote the use of illegal drugs.
