Pitkin&Crested Butte - premeetup to be determined closer to the date)

NOTE:  It looks like the August dates will be better for several of you who would like to do this trip.  We are extending it over a 4 night period, from Friday to Tuesday.  I believe that encompasses most of those who have responded with info about heir days off.

Unsure as to what time we will meetup on Friday.  However, as we get closer to the date, that can be determined.  We want to leave during the day however, because it is a long drive & we need to set up camp before it gets dark.

Description From Kathy: We can stay up to 4 nights  at our mountain property above Pitkin. Tents are available or bring your own. Hiking is available from our campsite. We would also hike Gold Creek Trails and take one day to enjoy Crested Butte and Emerald Lake. You will be seeing some of the most beautiful country in Colorado. Hobo stews will be prepared for you our first evening out. Dogs are welcome with the understanding that we are at 11,000 feet elevation and surrounded by national forests.

So much to tell...5 days & 4 nights of almost perfect weather; 3 hikes thru the beautiful Pitkin forests, all followed by fantastic dinners, campfires, laughter, music & games. We had lots of pups to keep our tents & cars warm at night - 8 the first 3 days, & 5 the last 2 days. Stacy & Joel P were our heroes who helped charge a car battery & inflate a near flat tire. The super moon shined on us all 4 evenings...it was so bright, we didn't even need flashlights. Thanks to Wendi with Dagwood, Kathy E. with Hercules & Teddy, Stacy with Buddy & Iggy, Barb with Lucky, Deb G. with MuShu for joining me, Ace & Toki for this amazing trip. A special thanks to Kathy & Joel P with Zoe, for allowing us to camp on their land & to bring our dogs!

Wow, what a weekend it was! Driving over Monarch Pass, camping @[masked] feet, delicious food with friends, watching the super full moon rise over the mountains, hiking, board games and laughter, a camp fire and long conversations...an unforgettable weekend and my heart full of gratitude. Sorry I missed Stacy, Kathy & Wendy and special thanks to Kathy P. & your husband for hosting us on your beautiful property!!!!!

Barb, you said it perfectly. Great weather, great company, great food, great views, great fun. But will we ever solve the mystery of MuShu's missing sweater?

Looking forward to this. Looks like lots of good food coming. Hope everyone finds us okay. We may put out some signs to help. See you Friday.

YAY Ace and Toki are coming!!! I will bring a salad for the BBQ. And, I also have cookware and stuff. Chicken does sound good :-)

    August 6, 2014

  • Colette K.

I will bring a small watermelon, apples, Quinoa chips, fried rice, & chicken (to cook for the BBQ or to add to the fried rice); spinach wraps for black bean-chicken-rice filling. I'll bring a saucepan for cooking the rice.

I have a few flashlights and a lantern. I have decided to bring both Ace & Toki, which should really make this an adventure for me!

  • Deb G.

Are any of the guys coming or is this a girls' weekend? I would like to join you, but am also working that weekend and couldn't come up until Sunday afternoon. Will anyone still be there Sunday - Tuesday?

    July 29, 2014

    • Colette K.

I will be in contact Tuesday to help make arrangements. Maybe you and Deb could meet at a certain point and ride up together?

      My husband is coming.

Food update - brining green chili, beans, rice, and eggs for everyone for Sat. or Sun. breakfast. Also wondered if anyone wants to do a BBQ fri. or Sat. night. We could bring our own meat or whatever and everyone else bring a side? What do you all think? Also, I think eveyone should plan to bring their own table wear (plates, cups, silverwear, etc....). Let me know what you think about the BBQ and if you need extra gear ..... I have some.

    July 30, 2014

    • Colette K.

Are you brining Buddy & Iggy?

      August 4, 2014

    • Kathy W.

Yes she is..... and possibly Teddy and Hercules who can stay in the camper.

      August 4, 2014

Hate that I will miss this. Other obligations tear me away. Have a blast

I've been out of town for three weeks so it is time for me to jump into this conversation. I will call each of you to verify information. I will do Friday nights dinner so don't plan on bringing anything there. Saturday night would be a good night for the BBQ. Bring your meat and a dish to share. I will have coffee and oatmeal for breakfast available. Bring rain gear, and it can be cold at night. Insect repellant is always good. If you want to travel together on Friday, Colette and I will meet at the parking lot at the McCulloch West entrance between 10 and 10:15. I have room if anyone wants to carpool. I will not be bringing Zoe, but dogs are welcome. Anyone is welcome including husbands or friends. If you are coming on a different day I will talk with you about where to meet. Please call me if you have additional questions. [masked]

Sorry, I'm going to drop out of this one. Family visiting that weekend.

Stacy and I will be bringing the big girl truck and driving up on Friday to stay through sunday. We will bring a large pasta salad, breakfast fixin's for all for one morning and a delicious apple cake, plus wine, can't forget the wine in a box!

    July 20, 2014

  • Wendi

I'll come for 2 or 3 nights and stay in my truck - for as long as I can stand sleeping with Dagwood and not my husband.....

Hi gals! This should be a great weekend! We will do some hiking, but nothing difficult. There ARE tents available, so if you need one, Kathy has a 2 man tent, and I believe two 4 man tents. Also, it will be easy to car camp as well. I got some great directions from Kathy, and I think everyone should be able to make it to the land with the exception of 2 wheel drive vehicles. If you keep in touch, you can park at the end of the road and we will pick you up. We should plan our meals together; I know you have some great camp recipes, & this would be a great time to share them. I will send out a detailed email, and you can get back to me. I might be able to set up a "conversation" email on meetup for those who have RSVP'd. Give me today, the 17th, to see if I can figure that setting out. Thanks! Colette

Good scenery, good friends and good food, sounds like heaven!

      1 · July 17, 2014

  • Wendi

Thanks Kathy. My husband pointed out that the road even up to Pitkin might be too much for the 5th wheel. I've not been up there - thought it was just a ghost town! Marcia, there are a couple of hotels in Gunnison that will take dogs, none of them cheap on a summer weekend though....

    June 12, 2014

  • Kathy P.

I wouldn't recommend taking the fifth wheel up to the property, but their is a nice campground just outside Pitkin. I will get details for you.

    June 12, 2014

  • Wendi

Kathy, we have a fifth wheel trailer I could bring up there and dry camp if there's no place to hook-up. Is there room for it at the property, or a place to hook up an RV in Pitkin?

    June 11, 2014

  • Kathy P.

I'll look into possible places to stay near Pitkin. That is the closest town although very small.

    June 11, 2014

  • Marcia H.

Wendi - I may be interested in sharing a room, but what about dogs? I believe the nearest motel is 20 miles away - kind of far.

    June 11, 2014

  • Wendi

The hotel idea sounds great - showers and mattresses are heavenly after a day of hiking. I'd be open to a roommate in a hotel if anyone else wants to do that. We can bring the rest of you lattes and bagels in the mornings.....

Actually I have Fridays, Saturdays, & Sundays off so I'm not sure that would work for me as I woud have to take time off work.

    May 17, 2014

  • Kathy W.

I can go later in july or in august but not the first week in july. This sounds amazingly fun Woohoo!!!!

    May 14, 2014

    • Kathy P.

Do the August dates work for you? Aug. 3-5

      May 17, 2014

  • Kathy P.

Depending on dogs, we can do some carpooling. If you want to see where we are going find the town of Pitkin on a map. About 1 mile before Pitkin we will turn into Quartz Creek Properties. These are old mining claims that they turned into 10 acre lots and started selling them in the seventies. We can drive right to where we will camp. I will have a pop up camper there and we have an outdoor toilet. Bring a tent and sleeping bag. I have two tents if you don't have one. Nights can be cold. You'll want some warmer clothes for evening and a rain coat just in case. I will prepare dinner for us on Friday night. Bring a cooler with other food you may want. I will make coffee and have instant oatmeal available for breakfast. We may eat out on the day we go to Crested Butte. If you have more questions feel free to call me at[masked]

    May 17, 2014

  • Marcia H.

Thanks. I have an old sleeping bag but no tent (got moldy and I'm seriously allergic to mold & mildew.

    May 17, 2014

  • Rebecca

It sounds fun. What will we need to bring? And how far do we have to carry it?

    May 17, 2014

  • Barbara T.

How do we get there? Driving? Hiking?

    May 15, 2014

  • Barbara T.

August 3-5 would work great for me.

    1 · May 15, 2014

  • Kathy P.

Aug. 3-5 are the alternate dates. We have tents and sleeping bags, but if you prefer a hotel, Gunnison has pet friendly hotels.

    May 14, 2014

  • Marcia H.

I no longer have my camping gear. Are there any little motels nearby? If so, are they pet friendly?
