The NumFOCUS diversity and inclusion committee
NumFOCUS launched a programme for Diversity and Inclusion in Scientific Computing (DISC) to enhance participation of people of all sorts of backgrounds and identities. I will speak about our current projects, which include a cookbook for organising diverse and inclusive events, a project to help all NumFOCUS communities adopt a code of conduct, and assessment of NumFOCUS events. I will also give a glimpse into what we plan to do in the future.
Leonie is a quantum chemist by training and works in scientific publishing, as Division Editor for Physical Sciences and Engineering at PLOS ONE. She serves on NumFOCUS’s Committee for Diversity and Inclusion in Scientific Computing.
The computer science behind a modern distributed datastore
What we see in the modern data store world is a race between different approaches to achieve a distributed and resilient storage of data. Over the past years there has been significant progress in respect in both the science and practical implementations of such data stores. In his talk the audience is introduced to some of the needed ingredients, address the difficulties of their interplay and show four modern approaches of distributed open-source data stores.
– Challenges in developing a distributed, resilient data store
– Consensus, distributed transactions, distributed query optimization and execution
– The inner workings of ArangoDB, Cassandra, Cockroach and RethinkDB
About the speaker
Kaveh is a core software engineer at ArangoDB. He has been responsible for the development of core facilities in the ArangoDB cluster; among them the consensus infrastructure.
How to combine blockchain and AI?
I will describe how we build a platform that can be used to connect and coordinate multiple IoT devices. With a decentralized ledger (blockchain) as a backbone, there will be no need for a central coordinator. Each actor (an IoT device, a human, a data or prediction source) will be represented by a digital abstraction, an "agent". Facilitating state of the art machine learning algorithms, agents will be able to autonomously discover each other, engage in exchange, gather data or even interact with the external environment (by controlling end-devices).
During the seminar, I will introduce the concept of the blockchain and I will describe the latest advancements in that field. I will introduce some machine learning algorithms which can be used in a decentralized setting. In the second part of the talk, I will show several case studies, focusing on smart city applications.

Marcin is Lead Research Scientist at Fetch.AI. His work focuses on blockchain design, consensus protocols and machine learning applications in decentralized systems.
