Learn Python The Hard Way - week 1: exercises 1 to 17

*** UPDATE REFERRING TO WEEK 1 MEETUP ***
We were able to obtain space for about 30 people for this Tuesday's meetup, and we still hope to be able to accommodate everyone in the following ones, so don't worry if you do not make to the confirmed list this time, keep going with the tutorial.

If you're in the confirmed list and can no longer join us, please be considerate with the long waiting list and change your RSVP to not attending, so someone else will be able to join :)

A huge thanks to Yahoo! for hosting us!! PLEASE NOTE THE NEW STARTING TIME. If you intend to use public transportation, the VTA light rail that departs from Mountain View's Caltrain Station stops right by Yahoo's campus (Lockheed Martin stop). If you're returning to San Francisco after the meetup, send a message to Paula (she can give a ride to 3-4 people to a Muni station).

*********************************************************

Are you a Python beginner? Do you have “learn python” in your wish list, but haven’t quite dived into it yet? Or you’ve started learning but find it hard to maintain a good pace through solo study? Then join us in a structured series of group study, and have all the basics of python under your hood in 5 weeks!

We will follow the “Learn Python the Hard Way” free online tutorial by Zed Shaw, a very popular resource for complete beginners. We will assign a set of lessons for each week, which you should work with during the week preceding the group’s meetup. The ideal is to try to work at least a little bit every day, even if just half an hour. Zed Shaw has recently talked in a pyladies event, and the set of lessons chosen per week follows his observations on which lessons students typically get stuck. The pace is reasonable but requires dedication. However, it’s OK if you prefer to set your pace, too!

Bring your questions, complete the assigned series, or get started in the next set (exercises 18 to 33). Join us to work on anything python!

I am biking from the Caltrain if anyone wants to bike with me. I will take the train from SF that arrives to Sunnyvale Caltrain station 5.55. Let me know if I should look for you.

The bike trail runs up Sunnyvale Ave, to Borregas street. Here's a map of how to get to the Yahoo campus from the Sunnyvale Caltrain on Bike. http://goo.gl/maps/2x...

Have any slots opened up? Pls confirm.

Would there be space if people of waiting list come?

    July 15, 2014

    • Dwight H.

It's looking like we'll have a bit of extra room

      July 15, 2014

  • Valerie P.

It's ok the update finished. I have a laptop. Thank you

    July 15, 2014

  • Valerie P.

I have a question. I had to update my laptop to fedora 20. The install is not complete. Is there any loaner laptops availiable for today's lesson?

    July 15, 2014

    • Liz S

Shoot, not aware of loaners available. Anyone else? If you have a laptop with a web browser (just don't have Python installed yet), you can use the coding environment at codeskulptor.org to work on the exercises and still learn a lot. I can help with that tonight if needed.

Is there a place to park bikes there?

    July 15, 2014

    • Dwight H.

Yes, there are the normal bike racks. There are also bike lockers that take normal padlocks by building F across the street.

      July 15, 2014

  • Liat Z.

I would like to give my space to someone else on the waiting list. I would love to go, but I think I need to play a little bit of catch-up..so I will try to go next time.

    1 · July 14, 2014

    • Paula A.

No worries, Liat! Please change your rsvp to not going if you haven't done so. See you next time!

  • Dwight H.

One comment about going to Yahoo on transit. Yahoo is directly between the Lockeed Martin and Borregas Light rail stops, so both stops are about the same distance from Yahoo.

However, I generally recommend the Borregas stop because it requires crossing the street fewer times, which considering how slow the lights are can really save time.

For this short series focused on Learn Python the Hard Way, we're only meeting on Thursday nights. Sorry about that! If your schedule changes, please drop by. Would love for you to join us.

Hi Valerie, Just wanted to give an update. It looks like we'll likely be meeting on Tuesdays from here on in. (Just waiting for location confirmation.) Hope Tuesdays work better for you.

      July 8, 2014

  • Yue Z.

Hi! Would love to join this study group. If we're interested in a spot in SF, we may be able to host at the Thumbtack office (360 9th street). Would that be of interest?

    1 · July 7, 2014

    • Paula A.

Thanks Yue! That can be interesting for future events in SF!

      July 7, 2014

    • Yue Z.

Okay. Just let me know. =)

      1 · July 7, 2014

  • Paula A.

I've just updated the date, but this has not been confirmed yet. It has been difficult to re-arrange due to holiday travels. Once we confirm a location, we will be able to open up for those in the wait list as well.

    July 7, 2014

  • Alice P.

Looking forward to week 1! I wanted to double check it is Thursday evening this week.

    1 · July 1, 2014

    • Brandi M. F.

The date for this one is the 10th, next week. I don't think there's a meetup this week.

      July 1, 2014

    • Paula A.

We will move it to the 15th, and Tuesdays thereafter. I will update the meetup page once we firm it up. Stay tuned!

      2 · July 1, 2014

  • Brittany M.

Hi! I'm on the wait list! Is there a limit to the amount of people who can attend?

    June 18, 2014

    • Paula A.

Hi Brittany, the only reason I set up a limit is because I want to avoid people getting to Red Rock Cafe and not finding a place to study. Based on our previous meetups, a good number of people do not show up, so even though you're in the wait list, you will probably be able to join us!

      1 · June 18, 2014

    • Brittany M.

Ok! I hope so!!! I'm really excited about this opportunity and being able to meet everyone!

      1 · June 19, 2014

  • Jen B.

I'm out of town on this date but look forward to other meet-ups with you all. Have fun!
