New Meetup: Quantum Physics and Pseudoscience

Announcing a new Meetup for Quantum Physics and Cosmology Meetup Group!

What: Quantum Physics and Pseudoscience

When: Saturday, May 22,[masked]:00 PM

Price: GBP2.00 per person

Where: (A location has not been chosen yet.)

This meetup, proposed by Adam, is a chance to respond to many of the popular fallacies about Quantum Physics and Cosmology as mentioned in the media and by various writers on the subject. Some of these ideas are as old as Quantum Mechanics itself - held by physicists such as Heisenberg, Wigner and Pauli but considered pseudoscience today due to nonfalsifiability and lack of evidence. This meetup will allow members to look at several pseudoscientific ideas claimed to gain support from Quantum Mechanical concepts such as wavefunction collapse and the effect of observation and entanglement of particles, and judge the facts to determine the truth and relevance (if any) behind them.

Such ideas claimed by writers such as Chopra, Talbot and Braden include (but are not limited to) -

* There is no observer separate from reality.
* There is no separate reality from the observer.
* The body is fundamentally made of information and energy and perceived as solid matter.
* The mind and body are one and the same and are not divisible.
* Biochemical reactions of the body are a product of awareness.
* That perception of reality is a learned behavior.
* That changing thoughts can and do change the body.
* There is an underlying consciousness or intelligence that connects everyone.
* Time is a human perception, not a reality.

( taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_mysticism )

Other popular ideas of dubious evidence and scientific validity proposed by physicists include -

* That Quantum Mechanics as applied to Brain Function can explain consciousness (Roger Penrose, Stuart Hameroff)
* That Quantum Physics demonstrates that reality as we imagine it is nothing but an act of consciousness (Amit Goswami)
* That Quantum Physics demonstrates the existence of the divine (Amit Goswami)

I am still deciding on a venue for the event - one much quieter and more suited than the Penderel's Oak. I will report to you on this this week.
