Run from Woodside to Rockaway Beach - with distance options

Let’s get together for a long casual-pace run from Woodside/Jackson Heights to Rockaway Beach on Sunday!

This run offers multiple starting points, which should allow you to meet the group wherever will be most appropriate to your level of training. The full run will offer about 14 miles, total. Our pace will be casual, meaning that we won’t set a minimum requirement for this run - however, we will aim for a 10-10:30 min/mile where possible. If you can run at approximately this range, you should be fine - traffic lights will help to keep the group together and we will do everything possible to not lose anybody along the way.

Starting point options are outlined below. But, our destination is the Bungalow Bar & Restaurant, on the Jamaica Bay side of Rockaway Beach. Please select your starting point based on your mileage goals (and please note where you plan to start in your RSVP or post a comment):

10:00am - 65th Street and Broadway (Woodside)
Meet at the SE corner of 65th Street and Broadway, by the R train (outside of the Hart Playground) at 10:00am. Please be prompt. If you start here, you will run the full 14 miles to Rockaway Beach, including a challenging hill section on the way to Juniper Valley Park. This area is easily reached via R train to 65th Street, E/F to Jackson Heights a few blocks away or 7 to 69th Street. There is car/bike parking in this mostly residential area on the border of Woodside and Jackson Heights. You can take the Q53 bus back to Woodside, a few blocks away, after the run.

11:15am (approx.) - Forest Park (Victory Field) - Myrtle Avenue and Woodhaven Blvd.
The group will stop at the track, inside the park (you can find us by the water fountains close to the park road), for our final water stop before hitting Woodhaven Blvd for the remainder of our run. If you start here, you will run approximately 8.5 miles, total. Note that the 11:15 time is approximate. If you don’t see us there, please be patient. But, it’s unlikely we’ll be there before 11:15 - you will want to be prompt.

Shorter Distance Options
If you wish to complete this run with fewer than 8.5 miles, you can take a bus along Woodhaven Blvd. toward Rockaway Beach, and meet us at a different location. If you would like to take this option, please message the organizer or post a comment that identifies how many miles you are seeking or where you’d like to start, and we will provide an approximate time and specific location for you to meet us.

As always, please don’t forget to apply sunblock and bring fluids if you would like. And, please don’t forget your Metrocard.

For whichever starting point you choose, please note that you must be able to run the full distance without the need to walk or stop. This does not mean that we won’t stop at all, as necessary, but you must be at an adequate fitness level to participate in this run based upon your chosen distance. This is for your safety and the enjoyment of other group members who are working toward varied objectives. If you have questions, please message your organizer directly.

We will enjoy beverages and/or food at the Bungalow Bar after our run. You may feel free to depart whenever you wish - the Q53 bus is a limited stop bus starting in Rockaway Beach that has frequent service and will take you along Woodhaven Blvd and all the way to Woodside if you wish.

Good run guys! Not sure if it was the humidity but I felt like today was a tough 8.5 mile stretch with no water stop. Should've brought more water. That wildlife refuge was a lifesaver, though.

Due to a nagging injury, I'm not going to be able to lead our run this morning. Holly knows the route and will be providing guidance, so you should be in good hands. If you are starting from 65th/Broadway, I'll be there to say hello at 10am. If you plan to start in Forest Park or elsewhere, I'll see you at the next run.

Hi all. I'm going to be VERY slow due to stiffness from my bike ride yesterday. I will not have my phone with me, so if you are unable to run today, please change your RSVP by 9:00am. Otherwise, ser you later.

    Sounds interesting this distance 14mile!
I would like to participate. My step is 9.5 min/mile and I think I can do it... The only thing is that I feel a little shy because I don't speak English well but I love running :)
I only ran three half marathons and many 10k

Hi Candy! If you are able to run the distance, we would love for you to join us. We have many group members who do not speak English as their native language. We are very friendly and will make sure that you have an enjoyable run.
