Introduce ROS, ourselves, and our Projects

This will be our first meet up. We will go over the basics of what ROS is, as well as get to know one another. Our projects are what will be talking about most of the time, so be ready to show off your cool robots :) If you are new to ROS, and don't have a project, we will find one for you! Hope to see you all there. Funded by: University of Illinois at Chicago College of Engineering.

Is the network setup part in the first tut still the same across all the newer ros distros? If it is then wow why isnt it documented like you have it in the NetworkSetup tutorials.. Thanks!!

Yes, as far as I know this is accurate for all versions of ROS from Cturtle to Indigo. And I also believe it is cross compatible so you theoretically should be able to run different distro's and different computers and keep communication among each other.

Sorry worked late. Who in the group is interested in humanoids? Who already has a robot built? Who is interested in working together on a robot? Thanks, john

No problem. Hope you can attend the next one! As of right now, nobody in my club including myself has experience with humanoid robots. However, this new member Atom brought in and demonstrated his qbo robot. Im sure we can work something out to have a specific humanoid meetup.

Hey Krystian. Great overview last night. Thanks for organizing the event and I look forward to trying out ROS sometime in the near future as long as I don't spend most of my time fighting Ubuntu :-)

Thanks kevin! Sounds great, if you need any help myself or anyone in our group is open for any questions! If you dont want to have constant problems with ubuntu, i will post a guide on how to use a pre-built virtual box image with ros already installed on it. Hope to see you at the next meetup!

Thanks for the meetup. This should help me resume my work with the teens at LevelUP. We already have a Turtlebot (but none of the current teens know anything about it) and this year's newest project is to build a humanoid bot. Would it be OK to bring them to a meeting in November or December (assuming the topic is relevant)

Ofcourse! Anybody is welcome to attend the event! Young students especially are encouraged. Bring all of them if you can :) we can also plan a meetup for any specific topics your students have. Everyone in the meetup will be ofcourse welcomed to attend as well!

Darn, I probably won't be able to make it tonight I'll definitively be at the next one though. As far as what time normally works for me, anytime on the weekend and any time after 6 on the weekdays.

    Were do we park?

    August 27, 2014

    • Krystian G.

    PARKING INFO:

You can park at any UIC parking lot free of charge. The closest parking lot is on taylor st. And morgan. Make sure you print a ticket, and bring it with you to the meetup. I will then give you a parking sticker that you will hand over to the parking lot cashier on your way out. If there is any problems, feel free to call my cell phone. [masked]

The building is the tallest building closest to taller and morgan street (second tallest on campus). There will be signs up saying "ROS MEETUP" to help guide you.

I would love to go to this but I don't get off of work until 6. When will this last until?

    August 5, 2014

    • Krystian G.

Come after work! If people are willing to stay longer it can last time 7:30-8! This is just a first meeting to get a feel for the people in the group, their schedules, and interests.

Sounds good then, I'm new to all of this and a bit rusty with math and a newbie when it comes to programming but I'm willing to give it a try. I'll see if I can make it.
