Building OpenCamp (a project management tool) - a learning series

Building OpenCamp (a project management tool) - a learning series

As part of the Google for Entrepreneurs at CoCo program we will have monthly sessions to help you get started building a real Ruby on Rails web application while learning best practices and fundamental web development concepts. Each session in the series will build on the previous session.

Each session will take place in three parts: an introductory lesson, a group coding workshop and an 'advanced topics' presentation.

We’ll aim to provide documentation and tutorials to go along with our sessions, so newcomers can catch up and dive right in.

For more information on our previous sessions and the structure of our events, visit our GitHub schedule page.

Logistics:

Parking: visit the CoCo MSP site for parking infomation. CoCo has a partnership with the Gateway Ramp (grab validations from CoCo Host to receive $5 parking). http://www.minneapolisparking.com/gateway/

Food/Drink: food, beer, soda and water will be provided

Laptop: since there is group hack-session during these events, you should bring a laptop with Ruby on Rails installed! There is a great resource at http://railsapps.github.com/installing-rails.html that can help you get started on your operating system. If for any reason you run into issues with that tutorial and can't get things running, that's okay too. Just bring your laptop to the event and we can help you get set up and be prepared to partner up with someone to follow along.

Google Group:

We have a forum available for members to openly discuss anything related to their Rails learning experience, please sign up at https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/railsmn.

I had another demo ready tonight that I didn't have time for, but I turned it into a exercise!

    If you are interested:

    * Copy the code from here: https://gist.github.com/jaw6/8412762
    * Paste it into a new file somewhere, maybe something like ~/path/to/open_camp/blocks.rb
    * If you run this with "ruby blocks.rb", you should have two failing tests (output should look similar to https://gist.github.com/jaw6/8412762#file-result-txt)
    * Figure out what you need to do to make the tests pass! (It should be pretty simple, once you figure it out!)
    * If you get stuck, let me know and I'll send you the answer! Either way, I'll send the answers to the list before the next meetup.

I'll be curious what people come up with. I'm wondering if there's a way to share, yet not give away the answer to those who are working on it?

Maybe create something on code wars ?

I didn't get the VM set up on my windows machine.

Hey everyone -- In case anyone needs it, here's a link to my slides: http://jaw6.github.io/ruby-blocks-enumerable/

I fixed up a couple of minor typos, too.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Also: be sure to let myself, Mo or Derek know if you have any general questions, or requests for topics for future sessions!

I am wondering what will be covered this evening? I was under the impression that last month was the first session of new build of Opencamp. Since nothing was covered would this be first session (https://github.com/railsmn/schedule/blob/master/open_camp/session1.md)? Checked out github page but not up to date.

    Thanks :)

I'm not sure if there will be a specific session, but there will be a couple of presentations (one on implementing a Mobile Push notification service with Rails). There will be lots of mentors around to help you out if you're starting on Session 1 today and have questions.

      Cool! Thanks Mo.

Is this the first installment of this series?

    January 13, 2014

    • Derek R.

Nope! I think this is probably the 9th or 10th. The way it is structure though is that you may come in at any point, we have documentation/tutorials/mentors that allow you to jump in.

I'd like to attend -- CoCo is close by my office so it would be convenient. I'd love to meet more local Rails developers, and especially help out if I can.

Awesome! We'll see you there :)
