Join us on extended bird walks along the hiking trails of the Ramapo Mountains. We use smartphones to record bird sounds. If you are skilled using smartphones for recording then please come along. Nature photographers are also most welcome. Our objective is to submit a complete checklist including media to eBird for each outing.
I create my own checklist which I’m happy to share with other eBirders. Not yet on eBird? Go to http://help.ebird.org . Begin with getting started topics. If you expect to help us with media then please review the Uploading Photos and Sound articles under the eBird Help tab.
Success depends on concentration and stealthiness. Extraneous conversation on the trail is distracting and alerts birds to our presence. Please limit most socializing to rest periods, and remain silent the few times we stop to record.
For trail descriptions we defer to the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference (2005), New York Walk Book (7th ed.). Trail Conference maps are indispensable. We use Trail Map 118 Southern Harriman Bear Mountain Trails, and Trail Map 119 Northern Harriman Bear Mountain Trails. Books and maps available at https://www.nynjtc.org/shop

This is the LONGER version of Surebridge Mountain including Green Pond. Island Pond is the highlight of this outing. Click on the link below to see a checklist from an outing with a similar agenda from earlier this year. The checklist provides specifics on birds, and the route including duration, distance, and trails. Island Pond is the highlight of this trip. Routes may change. Rain cancels. https://eBird.org/view/checklist/S44096185
Park at the first lot on Route 106 AKA Kanawauke Rd. We walk the unimproved Island Pond Rd to Island Pond and surrounding swamps: the target is Golden-winged warbler. We then climb Surebridge Mountain, and return along the ridgeline. Prairie warbler, Chipping sparrow, and Indigo bunting are expected. Last year I had 50 species on this walk.
