Ben Affleck stars and directs this dramatic thriller centred on a CIA ‘exfiltration’ specialist who devises a dangerous method to free six Americans from the apex of the Iranian revolution. Also stars Bryan Cranston (Drive), John Goodman (The Artist) and Taylor Schilling (The Lucky One).
Based on real events as depicted by Joshuah Bearman’s article Escape From Tehran. In 1997, Antonio Mendez (played by Affleck) was honoured as one of the 50 greatest spies in CIA history. Mendez created a plan to covertly evacuate the group of Americans diplomats that fled the US embassy in Tehran during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis. Able to convince Iran that the six hostages were members of a movie crew who were scouting the area for a film titled Argo, the hostages attempted an escape with their fake identities.
