What we're about

“Truly fine poetry must be read aloud. A good poem does not allow itself to be read in a low voice or silently. If we can read it silently, it is not a valid poem: a poem demands pronunciation. Poetry always remembers that it was an oral art before it was a written art. It remembers that it was first song."

Jorge Luis Borges

This is a meetup group for people who like to read, and be read to. Everyone is welcome! Bring a selection you like and read it! Bring sections from novels, poems, short stories, essays, children's books, journalism, folklore, drama, speeches, history, anecdotes, screenplays, memoirs, anything celebrating the power of story.

Writers who want to read their own work are encouraged to do so; those who'd rather just listen without reading are also welcome. Some events we can devote to a theme (e.g. ghosts and gothic writing in October, opening passages), but much of the time it'll just be "pot luck." You can read anything from a small poem to a whole short story. We'll also have times when we take turns reading through one book.

And remember, using different voices for each character in a story isn't just aloud, it's encouraged!
