The Underground Railroad is an excellent choice. It's in the New York Times "The 10 Best Books of 2016" The list also has some good ideas for future books.

underground railroad? um. yeah. that's cool for january methinks. we'll get to all these books for 2017 anyway, so the order per se is not such a big deal.

I'm not sure I can account for myself but somehow I have started reading war and peace. As a result, I doubt I'll have time to read the January selection, but if it is still allowed, I'd love to attend to listen.

I second the Underground Railroad. As I am reading the Humans I'm not sure it will spark as much discussion for a book club as others might - just my thoughts :)

I vote for humans and Christy votes for Underground Railroad , so it's a 3 way tie right now ( we will probably read all 5 of these at some point next year)
