Craft Night! Plus fusing plastic bags for crafting.

Join us for our first night dedicated to crafts! Bring anything you want to craft (ie: sewing, knitting, needlepoint, wearable electronics, art, etc) and come craft with the group.

We will also be presenting a demo on the fusing of plastic shopping bags for the purposes of crafting.

Please note: At the request of the location and their insurance concerns we cannot currently allow any soldering or open flames for this event. This may change in the future and only applies to this event currently.

As always the meeting is free to attend and participate in, but if you would like to be a full member please bring cash or check to pay your monthly dues.

Meeting is BYOB and refreshments/snacks are more than welcome.

This was one of our best meetings ever! Thanks to Lauren, Trae, and Marilynn for the excellent presentations! BTW we have videos of the demos in case you weren't there.

Marilynn, is Plarn made from fused plastic bags? Or just non-fused bags?

    March 5, 2013

    • Marilynn B.

Non-fused bags. All you need is bags and scissors. though a cutting wheel and mat won't hurt. I'll bring mine.

I will also demo making Plarn from plastic bags if anyone is interested.

I'm sorry to announce that after internal discussion at DISCo, for insurance reasons, they can't allow plastic bag ironing at the space. A demo could be made by having pieces ironed in advance and mimicking the process with an iron that is unplugged. and then stitching these pieces together. I know it's a bummer but I see no reason to cancel anything. I'll bring some creations I have fused as well, to show as examples.

I guess this just illustrates that we need our own space and our own insurance. We need donations of capital to make this a reality.

Did the have a concern about fumes? I could see that as a possibility. Is there not some way we could show them the demo beforehand to alleviate their concerns.

Trae, My workshop is on my property next to my house. It was a guest house with a garage...... And the last owner converted it to a workshop since he was an electrician and built other things. I'm upgrading it and fixing alot of stuff since it sat vacant for a long time and was in bad shape when i bought the property. it's not really that big. Once it's done you can look at it and see if its useful for events. It's located near trussville .

Irons for fusing are still acceptable. I don't think we ever intended this location to be used for anything but planning meetings and craft nights, did we?

Do you think anyone will be coming who could help me with crocheting? I'm trying to learn how and I keep messing up.

I am pretty good with the basic principles of crocheting, not great at following instructions (as in the rest of life). I'm happy to share what little knowledge I have!
