  • Delmarva TransParent Support group for parents and grandparents

Delmarva TransParent meeting November 18, 2019 Lewes Public Library 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm Delmarva TransParent is a new educational support group for the parents, grandparents and caregivers of transgender children and adults. It is sponsored by TransParentUSA.org, a national organization supporting local groups. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m., Monday, November 18, 2019, at Lewes Public Library. Regular meetings will then be held at 7 p.m., the third Monday of the month at Lewes library. The Rev. Rita Nelson, meeting facilitator, is an award-winning author for her memoir, “Always Kristen,” about her journey with her transgender daughter. Nelson said, “My vision is that while this will be a group for sharing our stories, it will also be a group where we can provide focused speakers on relevant subjects, education, and resource material for living, journeying with, and accepting our transgender offspring. This group will provide information that will help parents understand what it means to be transgender, how their rejection deeply affects them, and how to be loving and accepting. I don't want this group to devolve into gripe sessions, but I do want the members to feel it is a safe place to express their fears, disappointments and concerns.” “This experience can be incredibly isolating for parents in communities without a group like TransParent to provide connection, support, and resources. Our chapter leaders help parents process a myriad of complex emotions including fear, sadness, guilt, grief and anger so that they are able to better respond to their child’s needs,” said Kim Hutton, TransParent board president. “With a suicide risk of almost 50 percent by the age of 19 due in large part to a lack of family acceptance and support for transgender children, TransParent chapters are needed more than ever to help eliminate this outcome.” For more information, contact Rita Nelson at [masked] or[masked], or go to www.TransParentUSA.org.
