Claim the Job You Want!

Announce your targeted job or job category on your resume just below your name. Then build your resume to convince the reader that you will be successful in your chosen job. If you aim well, you will strike your target and generate more interview opportunities. We will explore strategies to use the space on the upper third of your resume to advantage. We'll examine ways to shout-out the points that clinch your claim, capture attention, and get a thorough reading that will reinforce your claim on the job you want. Bring your resume(s) and cover letter, too, for critiquing and suggestions. Your resume on line and in print, can stand out in a positive, impactful way that will give you an advantage. Handouts cover tactics on handling gaps in employment, transitioning to new job categories, and sorting through the dilemmas of resume writing, such as one page/two page resumes, what to include or delete, dates, and many other issues. The informal workshop focuses on the issues of participants and is intended to help attendees gain confidence in taking next steps. The leader has written more than a thousand custom resumes across industries, job functions and experience levels.

Have resumes changed over the past 10 years? Most resume writers advise two changes: (1) Delete your street address. Email address and phone are sufficient. If needed, indicate your location by saying, for example, “Bay Area Resident.” (2) Drop the Objective section. These empty and self-serving statements get in the way of a quick read. They take up valuable space and require the reviewer slow their pace to digest whole sentences. Better to have a headline that indicates your job category or function, perhaps with subheads that get more specific. Beyond those two changes computer software affords opportunities for more effective resumes with: Improved layouts, hierarchy using font sizes, tables and text boxes, line spacing greater than 1.0, such as 1.2, lines and color to indicate transitions to next sections, and much more. These possibilities lead to a resume that makes the main points with clarity and impact, is eye appealing, and guides the reader with considerably greater ease.
