Get High! Climb Mt. Monadnock

  • Mar 23, 2013 · 10:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

FORECAST IS FOR GALE FORCE WINDS with CLOSE TO 0° WINDCHILL

Before signing up for this event, please read and understand the entire Write-Up and the Liability Waiver. By signing up for this event you agree to the terms of the waiver.

This hike is limited to well-conditioned winter hikers with an appropriate level of fitness and prior above-treeline experience. Please do not try this if you are not ready. (I will be taking beginners up in the warmer weather.)

Event Rating: STRENUOUS with above-treeline cold and wind exposure

Thrill Rating: BREATHTAKING!

Distance: 4 MILES RT with 1800' elevation gain, straight up

Time Duration: Anybody's guess. If deep snow it will be slow. Last month's hike was 4 hours up and 2 down.

Blaze Orange: Not required

Certainly not the highest peak in New Hampshire, but with a 360° view, and the Boston skyline, the Presidentials, and almost half of New England visible on a clear day, this 3K footer is one of the most popular mountains in the country. I would have preferred to do this on a weekday to avoid the traffic on the trail, but with a tip of the hat to our working members, we are going up on a Saturday. We will just have to share the trail with some other hikers - and it still won't be anywhere near as bad as the hordes of summer. With a clear and sunny day, this could possibly be the most beautiful hiking you will do all year.

We will be taking the very direct White Dot Trail straight up to the summit, and then the White Cross Trail back down. Trail info is here. The latest Monadnock Weekly Report from Patrick Hummel, Manager of Monadnock State Park is here. We are a group, and as always, we go up together, stay together, and come down together. Getting to the top is optional, but all of us getting down safely to the base is mandatory.

FORECAST IS FOR GALE FORCE WINDS with CLOSE TO 0° WINDCHILL

And speaking of mandatory... this hike requires full winter hiking gear including the following mandatory items:

Appropriate winter hiking clothing. Layers. Absolutely no cotton anywhere! It's wide open up there and some days the wind blows like a hurricane. There is no shelter from it other than what you are wearing. Be smart - bring the right stuff. Best recommendations are here.

Winter hiking boots, w/ minimum 400gr insulation.

Gloves or mittens w/ chemical hand warmers.

Full face protection, including goggles. When the wind is blowing, exposed skin will freeze.

Traction devices. Microspikes or equivalent. (crampons not necessary, but some folks use them here)

Snowshoes and hiking poles w/ snow baskets. These are in addition to the traction devices. Have them fitted to your boots before coming to the hike for quick mounting. It will be far too cold for the group to be standing around while you are fiddling with them on the trail. Climbing snowshoes are better here than flat-land snowshoes, but bring what you have. Rentals at EMS and REI.

High-calorie, non-freezable snacks and lunch. You will be burning a lot of fuel to keep your engine running.

2 liters of water – in wide mouth bottles – inside insulated carry bags. No bladders. Don't mess this up! You will not have anything to drink when you need it!

Emergency whistle. Worn outside, in plain view.

Headlamp w/ fresh batteries. No hand-held flashlights. An emergency could require a late exit.

Up on the mountain, one person's trouble is everybody's trouble. Please review this equipment list and be sure that you have every single item. Sorry folks, but I am not fooling around here.

If you don't got 'em, you ain't comin'! Firm! This is a very serious matter of both personal and group safety.

We meet in the parking lot of the Monadnock Park Headquarters at 10:00 AM sharp. Be prepared to immediately hit the trail. We can set up car pooling as we get closer to the date and we know who is coming.

Maps and directions are here .

Oh, and if someone were to carry up a small thermos of hot coffee as an offering to the ice giants of the mountain top, I'll bet they would get first dibs on the next mountain hike I lead. Just sayin'. (black, no sugar, please)

Bob

Hey Mom, can I go outside and play?”

Except for the summit photo I figured I'd leave tagging photos up to everyone on their own so they can decide if they want them tagged or not ...

    March 23, 2013

  • Chris

Say, since we were on the road (by 7:10 for me) and actually met up before everyone else (by 8) - meaning before the Blue Hills people met up, wouldn't that officially make OUR hike today the actual 500th event? AND - wasn't ours originally scheduled before the others as well?

    March 23, 2013

    • Bob T.

Good try, Chris. I like the way this boy thinks.

    Hi Bob,

    March 22, 2013

  • Chris

With Francine dropping it looks like with me it's just Carolyn. I'll send an email to Svetlan to see if he still wants to go since I now have room. Everyone else is good, right? Carolyn, I'll see you between 7:30 and 7:45 (not sure how long it'll take to get to where Bob is talking about catching up with him). Carolyn - I'll email you seperately.

    March 22, 2013

All! Forgive me for being 'anti-social' here. I'm considering staying in NH until Sunday night. So as much as I want to save on gas, I'd have to be lonely in my car for 2 hours. See you all at the bottom of Monadnock around 9:45.

    March 22, 2013

  • Bob T.

Thanks for those good wishes, Jerilyn and Ken. I love you guys.

    March 22, 2013

    March 21, 2013

    • Bob T.

Smart call, Man. Challenging conditions this trip. It can't be done safely without the clothing and gear. Thank you for making a wise decision. Looking forward to other times on the trail with you.

      March 21, 2013

  • Chris

Francine at 7:15 should put us up to Prov right around 7:30 so that sounds good for you too ladies. That should leave us some built in extra getting lost going thru Worcester time. :)

    March 21, 2013

  • Francine

Ccri pk lot fine.... 7:15.... Fetch Carolyn after that. I think our ride will be about 2 hours 30 minutes tops.

    March 21, 2013

  • Chris

Francine, how about Warwick CCRI parking lot? Does anyone know the driving time from Providence to the park parking lot? I've been there once before but that included getting lost in Worcester so my time was a bit off on that trip. Once I know that we can figure out what time to meet at CCRI, and then for meeting Carolyn. Carolyn, hows my meet location for you sound? Prov by the train station?

    March 21, 2013

    • Bob T.

Better plan on at least 2 hours from Providence. Also you should factor in morning commute traffic in both Providence and Worcester.

      March 21, 2013

    • Carolyn W.

I've got just over 2 hours too. The meeting place sounds great. Do you want to meet at 7:30 or 7:45 to give us a little room for unexpected delays?

      March 21, 2013

  • Randall B.

    Does anyone need a ride

    March 21, 2013

  • Francine

OK...so where we meeting Chris and Carolyn ? I will not be in Newport but rather in Warwick area.. Francine

    March 21, 2013

  • Randall B.

    March 21, 2013

  • Randall B.

    does anyone want to carpool?

    March 21, 2013

  • Chris

Carolyn and I are probably riding together. I'm waiting on hearing from Francine (Francine - are you out there? Francine?) ...
If not Svetlan, we could problably make it the 3 of us ...

    March 21, 2013

    • Bob T.

Thanks for working on this, Chris.

      March 21, 2013

  • Bob T.

    My car is now full.

    March 21, 2013

  • Alfonso

Hey Bob, do you have room for one more in your car?

    March 21, 2013

    • Bob T.

Sure do. 8:00 @ McDonald's in the Lincoln Mall. Please call if you are running late.

      March 21, 2013

    March 20, 2013

    • Bob T.

I've got plenty of extras if you can't get to it.

      March 20, 2013

  • Chris

Other than Svetlan that is ...

    March 20, 2013

  • Chris

Hey - nothing much has been brought up about car pooling yet. I'm coming from Middletown in a Jeep Liberty

    March 20, 2013

  • Svetlan

    Anyone to carpool from Providence?

    March 20, 2013
