Sachuest Point Winter Hike (Weber Hike #38)

The refuge sports a newly renovated visitor center and over 2.5 miles of nature trails and viewing platforms.

From salt marsh and beach strand are habitats to upland shrub dominated lands, the refuge supports over 200 bird species, with such notable occasional visitors such as the peregrine falcon, northern harrier and the snowy owl.

Occupying a peninsula between the Sakonnet River and Rhode Island sound, the 242 acre Sachuest Point National Wildlife refuge is a very popular site with over 65,000 annual visitors each year. Once a horse racing area, then a Naval communications site and now a National Wildlife Refuge.

We will be meeting in the Wildlife Refuge parking lot at 11:00 AM and hiking the refuge trail shortly thereafter.

The hike should only last about 1& 1/2 hours.

Directions: From the Providence area; take 195 East to Fall River and then take 24 South toward Newport. Follow 24 South to the intersection with RI 114 South in Portsmouth. Continue on RI 114 South and turn left onto Valley Rd (RI 214) in Middletown.  At the 3rd traffic light Valley Rd turns into Aquidneck Ave (RI 138 A). Follow to the next traffic light and take a sharp left onto Purgatory Rd. After approx 1 mile bear Right onto Hanging rock Rd. and again bear right at the fork onto Sachuest Point Rd. Follow Sachuest Point Rd into the National Wildlife Reserve Parking lot and the end of the road.
