Rhody Writing Group Pages

Welcome to the Rhody Writing Group About Us Page

Group History

Formed in January of 2011, the group's goal is to get an extra pair of eyes on the short story or chapter of that elusive manuscript that you've been toiling away on.

What to expect

Joining the group and attending meetings means putting time aside each month to read through the works presented and give the author feedback that they would not be able to get otherwise.

Presenting authors will be put in a glass cage while critiques are given and can talk once the group ends the critique.

How much work

The amount of work presented may vary per meet up, it could be 3 pieces of work that top out at 5k words or it could be a full manuscript.

Some of the works may be adult in nature so the age restriction on the group is 21 and above.

How to a present work

If you wish to submit work you have to attend three meet ups in person.

Genres

Currently the group consists of writers who enjoy writing Science Fiction, Horror, Steampunk, Fantasy, General Fiction, Young Adult and on the occasion self help.

Although fan fiction is a great way to start writing, currently the group does not review fan fiction or erotica or previously published works.

Lists, lists and more lists

A list of presenting authors is drawn up between the last meeting and the nearest deadline. Emails are sent out announcing to the entire group that spaces are available. Updates are also sent to our Facebook Page.

A wait list has been created so space pending, authors who presented recently can submit different works for the next meet up.

Types of work

The type of work reviewed can vary from short story to chapters of a manuscript.

Minimum pieces of work

In order for a physical meet up to take place, a minimum of three pieces need to be submitted. If three pieces are not submitted then the meet up will turn into a write in.

A write in is from NaNoWrimo where people get together and write.

When, who and where

Space available, monthly meet ups are scheduled at the Warwick Public Library on a specific Saturday of every month from 200pm to 445pm.

Generally once everyone has arrived, a quick introduction for any new people and then the critiques begin.

The critiques are open to author feedback and generally there is no time limit unless there are a great many people to give reviews.

The cut off for submitting work is one week before the meet up.

This gives reviewers enough time to read the work and then present their critique.

File Formats

The file format of the work is recommended to be in PDF format.

This format allows for easy reading and is cross platform. Headers should include your name, the title of the work and page numbers.

There is a manuscript template located on the bulletin board for Word that has the spacing, text and margins set up.

The keep it simple format suggestions goes like this: Courier (or Times New Roman, but keep it simple, extravagant fonts is a no no), 12 point, double space and 1" margins on left and right. Italicizing thoughts is fine, bold facing words is not needed.

On non-activity:

After two years of non-activity, any non-active members will be removed at the beginning of the year.

Questions and comments, feel free to email Rob Bentley.
