Richmond Cohousing is a group of dedicated individuals working together to build an urban cohousing community in Richmond, Virginia. We envision a diverse, multi-generational, pedestrian-friendly neighborhood within 5 miles of downtown. We will design our community together to include affordable and energy-efficient homes, a welcoming common house and outdoor spaces, edible and native plant landscaping, and a playground. Under the guidance of a cohousing consultant, we are following a systematic approach to planning our community and hope to move-in by the end of 2017. We are actively looking for new members and hope you'll join us!
Many people have never heard of cohousing (also spelled co-housing), but it’s nothing more than the old-fashioned neighborhood updated to meet modern needs. Cohousing communities are intentional, collaborative neighborhoods created with a little ingenuity. Residents know their neighbors, encouraging a sense of community that is often absent in contemporary cities and suburbs. Private, conventional homes are individually owned but residents also have access to common amenities like outdoor spaces and a common house (or community building). Community is promoted by the layout of the neighborhood with homes facing each other across a wide pedestrian walkway. Shared governance and open dialogue is valued; everything is designed and managed by the residents who consciously commit to live in a close-knit neighborhood that seeks a healthy blend of privacy and community.
