dear friends--

we invite you to a Saturday Funday, with something for everyone.  this will be a dog-friendly day, so feel free to bring your well-behaved canine (plus what you need to clean up after him or her).  no dangerous or perceived-dangerous breeds, please.

we will start with a hike of about 3-4 miles right out my front door on the current then lost roads of Beverly Shores and thru the secret entrance into the state park.  after a hike on trail 10 the short way to the beach, we will hit the Lake Michigan shoreline, take a lunch & swim break, then continue along the lakeshore back to my house.  we will be i9n the sun a rather long time on the beach.  even if you don't want to swim, i would be prepared at least to wade to cool off.

be sure to check the weather just before the hike so you can be prepared with whatever gear is necessary http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/Beverly+Shores+IN+46301 . I hope to hike in swimming trunks and hiking sandals, and barefoot on the beach, and plan to go in the water.  we will have our lunch stop on the beach with full sun exposure, so even if you don't swim, you might want to be prepared at least to wade to keep cool.

Be sure to bring something to eat along, plus enough water (one quart minimum, two is better). Also bring sunscreen and a hat with a brim.  so far this year, there have been few mosquitoes, and our route will be either on the beach, or on high, dry ground most of the way, but use your judgement about insect repellent.

I will pass a hat for a small donation to cover the costs of using the meetup website.

of course when we return to my house, there will be substantial refreshments, and we will have a special chili cook off with a semi-valuable prize for the winner.  This will be a blind test with telegraphing and lobbying prohibited.  what is chili?  the dictionary.com definition is as good as an--"a Mexican-style dish made with chilies or chili powder, ground or diced meat, chopped onion and pepper, and usually kidney beans and tomatoes."  i would liberalize that to include vegetarian chili, with fake meat or no meat.  please let me know if you will be entering the chili cook off.  also, don't tell anyone which chili is yours, so we can have a truly blind test.

to augment the chili, please bring something to share, a main course, side dishes like baked beans, a potato dish, etc, or snacks, wine, vodka, liqueurs, etc.  Grillmaster Carl will be manning the fire for whatever you would like to toss upon it, so feel free to bring some meat (real or fake), fish, vegetables, tofu or what-have-you.  If you’re coming on the train or otherwise can’t bring anything, don’t worry about it, we’ll be ok--just add a little extra when the hat is passed.

we will enjoy dinner, judge the chili and award the semi-valuable prize. then segue to a game night with Taboo, Such and Such, and other friendly, laid-back games, then go our merry ways.

a note on accommodations:  now that we seem to be turning into a tri-state group, spread over a couple hundred miles, i thought i should mention a word about where to stay if you'd like to turn a meetup into a weekend event.

here are a few places to stay, near my house, and near where most of our events happen, in ascending order of priciness:

some suggestions to make things run more smoothly

1)      print out the announcement, or at least the directions ahead of time and bring it with you in your car if you are driving or navigating--I have frequently been delayed from arriving on time myself because I'm giving directions over the phone

2) if you are going to be late, be sure to call me at [masked].  If you will be a little late, we will usually wait for you.  If you're going to be more than about 15-20 minutes late, I will tell you how to meet us farther down the trail so everyone else doesn't have to wait.

hope to see you there,

Rick

Rick, I am sorry, but I will have to back out of the hike. I have come down with poison ivy on both legs, (although I was never allergic to it before), and really don't need the added aggravation. Diane and I would like to join in on the food and fun after...do you have an idea what time you might be back at the house? We'll keep Carl company.

    • John E. S.

As long as you stick to the trails, as we always do, you won't have a problem with the poison. I had it on both legs and both arms last hike without any additional problems.
