Columbus Day weekend camping and hiking at Turkey Run

note--our cabin is on Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), so it is an hour later than Chicago--we are meeting on Saturday at 3 PM EDT, so that means 2 PM CDT, Chicago time.  if you get to our cabin before i do, you will know you're in the right place if you see a brass dinner bell with a clapper on the wall to the left of the screen door.

note:  right now, i am limiting the event to 8 people, the number who can eat semi-comfortably on our screened-in porch.  i may increase the limit later, but haven't decided how much.  because our facilities are limited, i don't want to increase the numbers for sleeping or eating--but i don't care how many people come on the two hikes we have planned.  if you want to find your own accommodations nearby, and just join us for the hikes, go right ahead.  here are a few accommodation suggestions--

dear friends--

We invite you to join us for a weekend of camping and hiking in Parke co Indiana on Columbus  Day weekend.  We will sleep out in tents, cook over a roaring wood fire, play some games, and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature all around us.

We have a cabin in the woods overlooking the river with a kitchen with a stove (but no oven), microwave, refrigerator, and common cooler for drinks, also a bathroom, shower, and screened in porch.  We have heat and air conditioning.  We also have four bunks, but since we'll have more than 4 people, i would like you to have a tent and sleeping bag , and to save the inside space for emergencies.  This time of year, it could be cold in the night, so be prepared.  We will provide most meals and divvy up the costs, unless there is something special you want to contribute.  I may round upward a bit for the gas and electric,  and I will also pass a hat for a small contribution for the costs of using meetup.

I’m ok with preparing Saturday dinner, Sunday dinner, and Monday breakfast.  I would recommend eating on the way for Saturday lunch.  We will be leaving fairly early for the Sunday morning hike at Turkey Run.  I will have some light items for breakfast, like orange juice, tea, toast and bagels (we have a coffee maker, but I don’t know how to use it), but if you want anything heavier, you might want to bring something along.  Likewise, for Sunday lunch, I will have some bread, lunch meat, cheese, etc, but you might want to bring something of your own to supplement it.  It may also be a good idea to bring a cooler.

We will have some pop and beer to share, but for anything harder or more esoteric, byob. If you are a vegetarian, you probably should bring your own food.  I will make an appropriate adjustment in food charges.  As a matter of fact, if you’d like much in the way of vegetables or salad, you might want to bring some of it with.  we may need to make a shopping run at some point, but the closest food store is about a half hour drive each way.

Tho we do have indoor space, this will be roughing it to some extent.  We have a well with safe tap water, but the mineral content is pretty high, and some people prefer to bring their own bottled water.  We have no land line phone at our cabin, and since it is in a deep valley, there is no cell phone service.  You can, however, walk or drive about a mile to higher ground, and usually get a signal.

Since this is a cabin in the woods, you could see mice or evidence of mice, but they usually lay low when we are actually there.  of course there are the usual hazards of snakes, spiders, poison ivy, etc in the surrounding woods, but on the other hand, since we are in a dense, mature forest with fast moving water, there are almost no mosquitoes. For hiking, you will need something to carry water in, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat with a brim.  Bring clothing appropriate to a range of weather conditions, including rain.

two different people asked if they could bring their children.  tho i love children, and have 2 of my own, i think for this trip i say no.  children change the character of an event, and in case of bad weather, if we have 8 people who must spend any substantial time in a 2 room cabin, i don't think i'm up for children among them right now.  if you are staying elsewhere, and just joining us for the hike, bring the whole family.

You could arrive at our cabin anytime Saturday after 3 PM EDT:  please let us know about when you will be arriving.  I'll provide directions once you let me know that you plan to come.  check the weather beforehand here (http://www.weather.com/outlook/health/allergies/tenday/USIN0340?from=36hr_topnav_allergies) . If storms are predicted, please bring appropriate gear.  it’s usually 5-10 degrees warmer than Chicago that far south in any case, especially in spring and fall.


i realize 3 PM, even EDT, is a rather late arrival time, but it's about the earliest i can reasonably get there after stopping for breakfast, food shopping in the morning and allowing for the time change.  my suggestion is that if you would like to arrive earlier for some extra hiking, sightseeing, etc, go ahead and do it.  come as early as you want, but then meet us at my cabin at 3 PM.

Please let me know if you plan to come, and if you can give someone a ride, or need a ride (and what area you live in).  I will try to include some car pooling information. It is about a 3 1/2 hour drive from downtown Chicago to our cabin.  I will include directions later.

Make sure to print the directions out, for your GPS may not have a signal in some areas, especially right before you arrive.

because space is limited, it is more important than usual to cancel if you have signed up for this event and then decide not to go.  Here is an approximate schedule for the weekend.  remember, the times below are Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), an hour later than Chicago.

Saturday—arrive anytime after 3 PM EDT.  set up your tent and settle in.  when most people have arrived, we will go on a hike at Shades state park, up beautiful Shawnee Canyon.  dinner of brats and Italian sausage grilled over wood fire, also some other stuff.

play some games, including Schnauzer, a cabin tradition (bring 3 quarters).  hang out around the fire, not too late to bed.  listen to the sounds of the night.

sunrise         7:55 EDT

Sunday—a light breakfast, hike beautiful trail 3 thru Rocky Hollow at Turkey Run SP.  return for a lunch of homemade chili and other things.  hang out for a while.  In late afternoon, we may have a short hike down Sugar Creek right out our door, or an optional hike on beautiful trail 2 to Maidenhair falls at Shades state park.  dinner of bbq ribs cooked over wood fire, also some other stuff.

Monday—breakfast of omelets, clean up, break camp, go our merry ways.   I deliberately planned this schedule with plenty of slack.  If anyone wants to explore the area around our property, do extra hiking, drive around to see the covered bridges or some of the nearby towns, or stay in the area Monday after we depart, please feel free.

directions to our cabin:  Our property is located on the south bank of Sugar creek (also known as the Rock river), a medium-sized tributary of the Wabash; about halfway between Turkey Run and Shades state parks; and about halfway between the towns of Wallace and Waveland on High Bridge road. Travel directions follow below. Our address is 6309 e High Bridge rd, Marshall, IN 47859, but it is not posted. Our next door neighbor’s address is 6322 e High Bridge rd, Marshall, IN 47859, and it is posted. directions to our cabin:  take the Kennedy expressway (I-94), continue onto the Dan Ryan, thence to the Bishop Ford expressway, then the Borman expressway (just stay on I-94 all the way) to exit 2 in Indiana marked US-41 SOUTH (also Indianapolis blvd); remain on "41" about 80-90 miles; turn left on US 136, and continue to Hillsboro, then turn right on IN 341; continue south on "341"; "341" will end at IN 234  but you will continue going straight on the continuation of the road until you come to a "T,"  where a paved road will go off to the right, and a gravel road will go off to the left; turn left onto the gravel road, which may be marked High Bridge rd: after traveling through fields about 3 miles, the road will suddenly become paved, and you will descend into a deep valley and go over a bridge; just past the bridge, you will see a private road off to the right, followed by a house and garage

our cabin has no land line; my cell phone is [masked], but our cabin is in a valley that is a dead zone for cell phone use; if you leave a message, we should be able to get it if we go up the hill. Do print these directions out and bring them with.  you will pass thru many GPS dead zones, and will end up in one when you arrive.

      i'm working on some ideas for next year. 6-8 is about the right number for this trip, but it's difficult to hit that range exactly, and weather is a big factor. i tried a winter trip once with 8 people, and the temps varied from -20 to +10! one participant told me i'd taught her the true meaning of cabin fever.
