A Goal-focused Support Group Salon

  • Mar 1, 2014 · 1:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

note:  because of weather conditions and snow cover, parking is a bit problematic.  please read the following parking instructions carefully and adhere to them

go to the end of our driveway and park on the right side, if someone is in that spot, park on the left side, next person park in the middle, following persons, go as far forward as you can and park single file in the driveway:

if all the driveway spaces are taken, then let out any passengers you have, and go past our house and turn around, so you are facing back toward Broadway (east); go past our driveway, and park as far to the right as you can:  if someone is already there, park just beyond them:  be careful not to block anyone's driveway:

if you don't understand this, or all spaces are full up to Broadway, call me at [masked], or ring the doorbell and I'll give you instructions

thanks, Rick

Mary K and I invite you to a

hike, conversation salon & pot luck dinner

at my home in Beverly Shores

in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore

Saturday, March 1, starting at 1:00 PM

dear friends--

On Saturday, March 1, starting at 1:00 PM, we will hold our twelfth conversation salon.  Even though the inspiration for my salon is the soirée of culture and intellectual discourse of the eighteenth century French philosophes and the beautiful people who formed their circle of friends, my plans are for something fun and light, not heavy and ponderous, and I hope this will be an interactive learning experience rather than a talking-heads kind of discussion.

this will be a recurring salon that will meet maybe 2-4 times a year where we will identify, articulate, and share small to medium sized goals and give each other support and feedback to accomplish them.  things like--"i'd like to exercise more," "i'd like to learn Spanish," "i'd like to lose 10 lbs by next summer", etc.

this will be a joint effort by me and our own Mary K, who is a retired licensed clinical therapist.  but this will not be therapy, and we are not looking to address really serious personal issues--just ways we can help each other achieve modest goals that would bring more joy, depth, or accomplishment to our lives.

each person who wishes to will identify at least one goal in a reasonably specific way--we will write these down, and share ideas of how the goal can be achieved, and have some reality-check, like stepping on a scale, or bringing a photo of a project.   this will be pretty laid back, being combined with a hike and pot luck, and again this isn't therapy, just mutual support.

a thank you to Patrice who has volunteered to be the secretary for this salon, so we have a record of what each person's goal is and we can chart progress at subsequent salons.

i was once criticized for having events that were not serious enough--this will be no exception.  there will be a healthy dose of outdoor exercise, camaraderie, and food along with the serious stuff.

to start, just to clear our heads, we will have a short walk of about 2 miles, unless ground conditions are too treacherous again like at the last salon.

i suggest you eat lunch before you arrive, because our schedule will be first hike, then start the salon, then break for food, then continue the salon if we have not gotten to everyone.

I will pass a hat to request a small donation to help cover the expenses of using the meetup website.

and there will be substantial refreshments as well.  I plan to to make a hearty pot of split pea soup with ham myself, and some barbecued ribs, but this will not be enough to feed everyone, so please bring something to share, a main course, side dishes like chili, baked beans, a potato dish, etc, or snacks, wine, vodka, liqueurs, etc.

despite the weather, we can also use the grill.  Grillmaster Carl will be manning the fire for whatever you would like to toss upon it, so feel free to bring some meat (real or fake), fish, vegetables, tofu or what-have-you.

we are long on paper plates, plasticware, etc, from past contributions, and i plan to use down my inventory at this event, so don't bring any of those items, please.

If you’re coming on the train or otherwise can’t bring anything, don’t worry about it, we’ll be ok just add a bit extra when i pass around the hat.

here are some goal-setting guidelines suggested by Mary--

SMART criteria

Specific  The goal should provide a precise outcome or accomplishment. (eg, “lose 5 lbs by September,” rather than “lose some weight”)

Measurable  Establish concrete criteria for measuring progress toward the attainment of each goal  you set.

Achievable  Ask, “With a reasonable amount of effort and application can the objective be  achieved?” A goal can be high and still achievable.

Relevant  Will accomplishing this goal improve your life or accomplish something you value?

Time Based  Goals should include, where possible, projected time-lines, dates of achievement and  accomplishment.

“Evidence” test    Goals are not just activities. If a goal looks too much like just a description of an activity, ask,  “What is the evidence that this goal is accomplished?” The evidence, or end result, is actually  the goal – not the activity itself.

Example of an activity: carpentry.

Example of a Goal: build a storage shed of at least 100 square feet to keep my garden tools in by July 1.

I don’t mind if people just listen and discuss without setting a goal for themselves, but please do not be disruptive.  that included no phone calling, texting, laptopping, or side conversations anywhere on the floor where we are meeting.  This has been honored in the breech in the past, and I don’t want it to happen this time.

So please let me know if you plan to come, and if you can give someone a ride, or need a ride (and what area you live in).  I also encourage you to take pictures and post them to meetup, and to comment on the event (if you had a good time, ha ha : )  )

a suggestion to make things run more smoothly   please print out the announcement, or at least the directions ahead of time and bring it with you in your car if you are driving or navigating--I have frequently been delayed from arriving on time myself because I'm giving directions over the phone

hope to see you all,

Rick

This was a wonderful experience, clearly well-planned and run, and even more successful than I imagined it would be in creating support for the participants.

I am unable to attend. I am going out of town in the early evening, and need to leave earlier because of the pending weather. I cannot wait until the weather does not determine (or cancel!) my plans. I was looking forward to this SO much! Boo!!

Patrice and Carolyn - given parking constraints, it would probably make sense to carpool with one of you if it's still convenient. I am close to Highway 12 at County Line Road (by West Beach). Would either of you be driving up on 12, or OK to get off the big highways at Lake Station to come pick me up?

Jane and Greg: I've decided not to go to Rick's house on Saturday since the weather is still iffy and I don't want to waste anyone's time. Hope you have a good day and see you next time.

  • Carolyn

Hi, Jane: My plans are sort of up in the air since I keep getting conflicting weather reports and I'm not going to drive in the snow - I've had enough of that. I might have to wait until Friday to see what's happening on Saturday. Sorry to have to put you off, but I wanted you to know the situation. Thanks.
