despite somewhat iffy weather, the trip is still on. make sure to dress properly, and call me at[masked] if needed. Rick
we invite you to a moderate bike ride of about 12 miles roundtrip (with several opportunites to expand), followed by a visit to the Chesterton European Market, and a gourmet dinner at Lucrezia.
we will meet at the Dune Park train station, bike about 2 miles on the Calumet trail ( http://www.indianatrails.org/Calumet.htm ) to the Greenbelt trailhead on Mineral Springs rd, then try out the brand new Porter-Brickyard bike trail, still under construction, for a one-way trip of about 6 miles, and follow with a encore visit to the Chesterton European Market http://www.chestertonseuropeanmarket.com/, then lunch at one of our favorites, Lucrezia http://www.lucreziacafe.com/, and bike the 6 miles back and go our merry ways, for a total of an moderate 12 miles of biking.
if you'd like to turn this into a longer bike trip, however, there are several options.
1) start at the Beverly Shores train station at an earlier time, and bike the Calumet trail west to add an extra 3 miles each way (just be at Dune Park by 11:00)
2) start at the parking lot at the eastern terminus of the Calumet trail at a still earlier time, and bike the Calumet trail west to add an extra 6 miles each way (just be at Dune Park by 11:00)
3) pick up the Prairie-Duneland trail ( http://www.indianatrails.org/Prairie_Duneland_Trail_Portage.htm ) in Chesterton after lunch and ride it as far as you wish
be sure to wear a helmet, and check your tire pressure beforehand. make sure to have a good lock to secure your bike while we are at the Euro Market and having lunch. if anyone has a tire repair kit and/or pump, i would be grateful if you would bring them along.
if anyone needs any last minute repairs or equipment, there is a bike shop in Chesterton

note--the South Shore line does not allow bicycles except for the collapsable kind in a collapsed state.
several people couldn't attend the Euro Market visit in mid-June, and hoped we would do it again, so this would be a chance. it would also be the exact tenth anniversary of the first bicycle event my group ever had. as always, you may attend any or all of these separate component activities. contact me for more details as needed if you plan to expand your trip.
hope to see you there,
