Words to Live By--a conversation salon

  • Mar 2, 2013 · 1:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

because of the large number of people signed up for this event, and that there are people on the waiting list, please do cancel on this site if you decide you won't be coming. thanks, Rick

the morning weather report at 11 AM--30 and cloudy, with about 1-2 inches of powdery to crusty snow on the trails. it might be a good idea to bring a change of shoes, or at least socks, in case your feet get wet on the walk.

be carefully on the driveway and the stairs--by the time i got here for the weekend, the snow had crusted over, and was unable to be shoveled.

we invite you to a

hike, conversation salon & pot luck dinner

at my home in Beverly Shores

in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore

Saturday, March 2, starting at 1:00 PM

dear friends--

On Saturday , March 2, starting at 1:00 PM, we will hold our tenth conversation salon. Even though the inspiration for my salon is the soirée of culture and intellectual discourse of the eighteenth century French philosophes and the beautiful people who formed their circle of friends, my plans are for something fun and light, not heavy and ponderous, and I think the topic will be a learning and discovering experience for all, more of a game than a talking-heads kind of discussion.

So we invite you to our tenth conversation salon--Words to Live by. Here's how it will work. Please select a quotation that embodies your life philosophy, or has had an influence on your life, or just that you like or think is cool. I will pass out index cards. Please write your quotation, and its source, on the card, fold it once, and put it in the hat/bowl/urn that I pass around. It can be something written or spoken by someone past or present, excerpts from a book, poem, song, etc. Please try to keep it relatively succinct.

We will pass the quotations around, and each person in turn will pick one at random and read it. We will discuss it a few minutes, and then I will ask the person who selected it to identify themself and briefly tell what it means to them (unless it's an especially dark secret and they wish to remain anonymous).

just to clear our heads, we will have a short walk of about 2 miles beforehand.
there is actually less snow here than i expected, and we probably can use the trails. still working on a route for our short walk.

i suggest you eat lunch before you arrive, because our schedule will be first walk, then start the salon, then break for food, then continue the salon if we have not gotten to everyone.

Of course there will be substantial refreshments as well. I plan to I plan to make a hearty pot of split pea soup with ham myself, and some barbecued ribs, but this will not be enough to feed everyone, so please bring something to share, a main course, side dishes like chili, baked beans, a potato dish, etc, or snacks, wine, vodka, liqueurs, etc. despite the weather, we can also use the grill for whatever you would like to bring to toss on it, so feel free to bring some meat (real or fake), fish, vegetables, tofu or what-have-you to cook, since it is right outside the back door on the deck. If you’re coming on the train or otherwise can’t bring anything, don’t worry about it, we’ll be ok.

I don’t mind if people just listen and discuss without reading, but please do not be disruptive. that included no phone calling, texting, laptopping, or side conversations anywhere on the floor where we are meeting. This has been honored in the breech in the past, and I don’t want it to happen this time.

So please let me know if you plan to come, and if you can give someone a ride, or need a ride (and what area you live in). I also encourage you to take pictures on the hike and post them to meetup, and to give the event an evaluation (if you had a good time : ) ) at the event I will pass a hat to request a small donation to help cover the expenses of meetup.

a suggestion to make things run more smoothly please print out the announcement, or at least the directions ahead of time and bring it with you in your car if you are driving or navigating--I have frequently been delayed from arriving on time myself because I'm giving directions over the phone

hope to see you all,

Rick

directions & parking instructions:

by car from Chicago: (driving time from downtown is about 1 hour 15 minutes) follow I-90 (Kennedy-Dan Ryan) East; at exit 59A, be sure to follow signs to "Chicago Skyway/Indiana Toll road"--the Skyway will turn into the Indiana Toll rd at the state line: tolls can be paid with I-pass or cash; at I-90 exit 21, get onto I-94, be sure to go East (marked Detroit); exit I-94 at exit 26 marked IN 49 north; continue to US 12 east, continue on US 12 about 4 miles to Broadway (traffic light opposite National Lakeshore campground, gas station & liquor store on corner) and turn left; continue about 1/2 mile past Beverly & Bellevue, and turn left at Marne, continue to 11 w Marne near the end of a cul-de-sac; our house is on the left, and is a gray, three story house set back rather far from the road; street parking is not allowed in Beverly Shores, but our gracious neighbors, Henry & Mary are allowing us to use their parking spaces across the street (don't block their driveway!); if these spaces are taken, go to the end of our driveway and park on the right side, if someone is in that spot, park on the left side, next person park in the middle, following persons, go as far forward as you can and park single file in the driveway: if all the driveway spaces are taken, call me at [masked], or ring the doorbell and I'll give you instructions; please try to arrive by 1:00, unless you don’t plan to go on the walk, in which case arrive by 2:30; we will wait till 1:30, then depart on foot right out the door for the pre-salon hike

from Northwest, West, or South suburbs: follow the TriState tollway (I-294) east until it merges with I-94 east; exit I-94 at exit 26 marked IN 49 north; go north to US 12 east (exit on left), continue on US 12 about 4 miles to Broadway (traffic light opposite National Lakeshore campground, gas station & liquor store on corner) and turn left; continue about 1/2 mile past Beverly & Bellevue, and turn left at Marne, continue to 11 w Marne near the end of a cul-de-sac; our house is on the left, and is a gray, three story house set back rather far from the road; street parking is not allowed in Beverly Shores, but our gracious neighbors, Henry & Mary are allowing us to use their parking spaces across the street (don't block their driveway!); if these spaces are taken, go to the end of our driveway and park on the right side, if someone is in that spot, park on the left side, next person park in the middle, following persons, go as far forward as you can and park single file in the driveway: if all the driveway spaces are taken, call me at [masked], or ring the doorbell and I'll give you instructions; please try to arrive by 1:00, unless you don’t plan to go on the walk, in which case arrive by 2:30; we will wait till 1:30, then depart on foot right out the door for the pre-salon hike

by the South Shore line: get the South Shore at the Metra Electric stations at 10:45 AM at Randolph, or at Van Buren, Roosevelt rd, Hyde Park, etc; take the train to the Beverly Shores station (you will have to tell the conductor you're getting off because it is a flag stop); train arrives at 12:45; walk toward the lake (away from US 12) on Broadway thru the wetland, past Beverly & Bellevue, and turn left at Marne, continue to 11 w Marne near the end of a cul-de-sac; our house is on the left, and is a gray, three story house set back rather far from the road, ring the doorbell (walk is about 15 minutes)—it’s all right if you arrive early, or call me and maybe someone can pick you up; check the website below for trains returning to Chicago; you also may be able to get a ride back to the city from someone else;
; we will wait till 1:30, then depart on foot right out the door for the pre-salon hike

I seem to have lost a black knit ski cap at Rick's. It has a small label reading "Tomczak" sewed on the inside. Anyone find it?

    March 6, 2013

  • Donna

Yes, Glenn, it was read & discussed. Thought provoking quote.

This was a really fun time combined with a decent, exhilarating workout. Did anyone ever get to reading my quore after I left: " Never say anything that is not an improvement upon silence" by Edmund Muskie (Sen. D, Maine, late 1960s early 1970s )?
