short hike, poetry reading, and pot luck

as long as the beautiful weather holds up, i plan to have a somewhat longer hike, maybe more like 3-5 miles, with an option of shortening it. Carl will still be at my house in case anyone wants to come back or do a shorter hike, or arrives later. in this case, if you are coming just for the poetry reading, maybe arrive more like 3-3:30.

because of the large number of people signed up for this event, and that there are people on the waiting list, please do cancel on this site if you decide you won't be coming. thanks, Rick

we invite you to a

conversation salon & pot luck dinner

at my home in Beverly Shores

in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore

Saturday, January 12 starting at 1:00 PM

dear friends—

On Saturday afternoon, January 12 starting at 1:00 PM, we will have an eclectic event at my house in Beverly Shores, Indiana. we will start with a hike of 3-4 miles thru the woods on the lost roads of Beverly Shores, with an optional side trip to the lake, then we will return to hold our ninth conversation salon. Even though the inspiration for my salon is the soirée of culture and intellectual discourse of the eighteenth century French philosophes and the beautiful people who formed their circle of friends, my concept is a bit lighter--a gathering of fun, learning, discovery, and of course, refreshments.

We will have a poetry reading, at which people could bring a short selection of poetry, classic, modern, or homemade, to read and discuss. I have held poetry readings around a roaring fire at my cabin every fall since 1992, and at a winter indoor setting since 2009. Since high school I have enjoyed poetry, and informal conversations have revealed a number of fellow travelers in our group in this respect.

I especially like the tradition of reading poetry out loud. We will still have a roaring blaze in the fireplace, and will enjoy the beautiful scene out the windows. So please bring a short bit of poetry to read and discuss to the salon. How short? Well, don't plan to recite the Iliad , otherwise I doubt that will be a problem. What is poetry? My definition is pretty broad--you won't be sent home if you bring prose, as long as you're not planning to read from the phone book or the newspaper. You can also just come to listen and discuss, no problemo .

i plan to read some excerpts from Milton's Paradise Lost myself.

i suggest you eat lunch before you arrive, because our schedule will be first walk, then read some poetry, then break for food, then probably read some more poetry.

Of course there will be substantial refreshments as well. I plan to I plan to make a hearty pot of black bean soup myself, and some barbecued ribs, but this will not be enough to feed everyone, so please bring something to share, a main course, side dishes like chili, baked beans, a potato dish, etc, or snacks, wine, vodka, liqueurs, etc. despite the weather, we can also use the grill for whatever you would like to bring to toss on it, so feel free to bring some meat (real or fake), fish, vegetables, tofu or what-have-you to cook, since it is right outside the back door on the deck. If you’re coming on the train or otherwise can’t bring anything, don’t worry about it, we’ll be ok.

I don’t mind if people just listen and discuss without reading, but please do not be disruptive. that included no phone calling, texting, laptopping, or side conversations anywhere on the floor where we are meeting. This has been honored in the breech in the past, and I don’t want it to happen this time.

So please let me know if you plan to come, and if you can give someone a ride, or need a ride (and what area you live in). I also encourage you to take pictures on the hike and post them to meetup, and to give the event an evaluation (if you had a good time : ) ) at the event I will pass a hat to request a small donation to help cover the expenses of meetup.

a suggestion to make things run more smoothly please print out the announcement, or at least the directions ahead of time and bring it with you in your car if you are driving or navigating--I have frequently been delayed from arriving on time myself because I'm giving directions over the phone

hope to see you all,

Rick

directions & parking instructions:

by car from Chicago: (driving time from downtown is about 1 hour 15 minutes) follow I-90 (Kennedy-Dan Ryan) East; at exit 59A, be sure to follow signs to "Chicago Skyway/Indiana Toll road"--the Skyway will turn into the Indiana Toll rd at the state line: tolls can be paid with I-pass or cash; at I-90 exit 21, get onto I-94, be sure to go East (marked Detroit); exit I-94 at exit 26 marked IN 49 north; continue to US 12 east, continue on US 12 about 4 miles to Broadway (traffic light opposite National Lakeshore campground, gas station & liquor store on corner) and turn left; continue about 1/2 mile past Beverly & Bellevue, and turn left at Marne, continue to 11 w Marne near the end of a cul-de-sac; our house is on the left, and is a gray, three story house set back rather far from the road; street parking is not allowed in Beverly Shores, but our gracious neighbors, Henry & Mary are allowing us to use their parking spaces across the street (don't block their driveway!); if these spaces are taken, go to the end of our driveway and park on the right side, if someone is in that spot, park on the left side, next person park in the middle, following persons, go as far forward as you can and park single file in the driveway: if all the driveway spaces are taken, call me at [masked], or ring the doorbell and I'll give you instructions; please try to arrive by 1:00, unless you don’t plan to go on the walk, in which case arrive by 2:30

from Northwest, West, or South suburbs: follow the TriState tollway (I-294) east until it merges with I-94 east; exit I-94 at exit 26 marked IN 49 north; go north to US 12 east (exit on left), continue on US 12 about 4 miles to Broadway (traffic light opposite National Lakeshore campground, gas station & liquor store on corner) and turn left; continue about 1/2 mile past Beverly & Bellevue, and turn left at Marne, continue to 11 w Marne near the end of a cul-de-sac; our house is on the left, and is a gray, three story house set back rather far from the road; street parking is not allowed in Beverly Shores, but our gracious neighbors, Henry & Mary are allowing us to use their parking spaces across the street (don't block their driveway!); if these spaces are taken, go to the end of our driveway and park on the right side, if someone is in that spot, park on the left side, next person park in the middle, following persons, go as far forward as you can and park single file in the driveway: if all the driveway spaces are taken, call me at [masked], or ring the doorbell and I'll give you instructions; please try to arrive by 1:00, unless you don’t plan to go on the walk, in which case arrive by 2:30

by the South Shore line: get the South Shore at the Metra Electric stations at 10:45 AM at Randolph, or at Van Buren, Roosevelt rd, Hyde Park, etc; take the train to the Beverly Shores station (you will have to tell the conductor you're getting off because it is a flag stop); train arrives at 12:15; walk toward the lake (away from US 12) on Broadway thru the wetland, past Beverly & Bellevue, and turn left at Marne, continue to 11 w Marne near the end of a cul-de-sac; our house is on the left, and is a gray, three story house set back rather far from the road, ring the doorbell (walk is about 15 minutes)—it’s all right if you arrive early, or call me and maybe someone can pick you up; check the website below for trains returning to Chicago; you also may be able to get a ride back to the city from someone else

Rick, I missed the entire group including my favorite leader! I'm putting my house up for sale in March and the pre-sale cleaning is the pits! Hope to be hiking soon and enjoying the company of all.
