alert: i offered Zak a ride to tomorrow's hike, but he is working late and can't get here for my morning departure. i would be grateful to anyone who could give him a ride tomorrow. his phone is[masked], and his e-mail is [masked]. contact him as early or late as needed. thanks, Rick
note: the park is in the Eastern time zone--we will meet at 12:00 EST (South Bend time) which is equal to 11:00 AM CST (Chicago time)
i have never hiked here before, so this will be a new experience for all of us (unless you've been there). i have put together a hike of about 4-5 miles.
Make sure to check the weather close to the date of the event and dress appropriately. http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/North+Liberty+IN+USIN0487:1:US. Be sure to bring along plenty of water (preferably 2 quarts), sunscreen, a hat with a brim, and a snack which we will eat along the way.
we will drive a considerable distance past the gatehouse, and meet at the Nature Center parking lot. we will start out on trail 1 along the shores of Lake Worster, then continue on trail 2 up and down some hills to the highest point in the park, where we will stop for lunch. then we will return to the nature center on a different part of trail 1, crossing the mountain bike trail a couple times.
we will have dinner afterwards in nearby LaPorte. El Bracero appears to have good reviews, but is basically a pig in a poke for me, so if anyone else has another dining recommendation west of Potato Creek, please let me know.
This park is close to South Bend, and some of our newish hikers from there, whom i hope to see. December 1 could be iffy weather, but it seems December is the new November, so i'm hoping for autumnal conditions.
please let me know if you expect to come to this event, and if you can give someone a ride, or need a ride (and what area you live in). I also encourage you to take pictures on the hike and post them to meetup, and to give the event an evaluation (if you had a good time : ) ) Before the hike I will pass a hat to request a small donation to help cover the expenses of meetup.
a few suggestions to make things run more smoothly
1) print out the announcement, or at least the directions ahead of time and bring it with you in your car if you are driving or navigating--I have frequently been delayed from arriving on time myself because I'm giving directions over the phone
2) bring enough cash to cover your meal if you come to dinner: restaurants usually don't like splitting up credit card charges, and it just delays and complicates the process of paying the bill
3) if you are going to be late, be sure to call my cell phone at[masked]-0428. If you will be a little late, we will usually wait for you. If you're going to be more than about 15-20 minutes late, I will tell you how to meet us farther down the trail so everyone else doesn't have to wait.
hope to see you there,
