Dear Bella’s Mom et al,

You probably don’t know me; we haven’t been to a meet up since my almost 6 yr old lab was a smudge, but I continue to remain on the mailing list in case we need alternative play groups again (and because Tara is so on top of local happenings, pet related recalls, etc).

Anyway, given my own pup’s medical expenses this past year, I felt the need to speak up.
Baci (my lab) had a high velocity disk explosion in his neck area last April; to make a long story short, he was in the emergency care for 5 days (because such things always happen on weekends in my life).
Fortunately, he did not need surgery because there wasn’t much material.  Even so, the resultant swelling essentially paralyzed both back legs.  He had feeling back after a few days, but couldn’t use either back leg safely for almost 4 weeks.

The 5 day emergency visit was expensive- almost $6k, but it was the month of boarding at the therapy facility, and months and months of rehab that followed, plus mobility aids, that have brought the total related costs up to well over $15k.

PLEASE keep in mind it’s not just the procedure, but the follow up care and equipment (braces, slings, ramps, etc) that one also needs to factor in.

Side note about therapy- there are two boarding facilities in Rochester- one in Greece, and TheraVet in Webster.  It’s literally only a few dollars more a day, but if you can make it to the east side, I HIGHLY recommend TheraVet.
I’m the person that plans their vacations around their dog- there was only one boarding facility I trusted and if they were full, I wasn’t leaving him anywhere else.  I was fortunate to find an additional home away from home when I discovered TheraVet.
While I have not heard any negative feedback about the Greece facility, people who have been to both locations claim there’s no comparison between the two; TheraVet is well worth the extra travel time and $ in their minds.
I’m not sure about the Greece facility, but I know at TheraVet there are a couple memorial funds people have set up and made available to assist with both the costs of therapy, as well as equipment.

Finally, while it’s too late here obviously, I cannot recommend pet insurance enough.  I initially bought it for when he was older, or in the event of something like a freak car accident, but was so lucky to have it when this happened.
Between submitting the claim (which can be done electronically) and receiving the full claimed reimbursement amount (direct deposited in my account), there was a total of 5 business days.  I was getting ready for battle thinking they would try and avoid paying, but ended up wishing my own insurance claims were that easy.
Had I known I would have gone with a higher max incident coverage than what I did, but the $8k definitely made a sizable dent in the total bills, and was so worth the $25/ month I was paying.  I am enrolled in VPI, but have also heard wonderful things about Healthy Paws- enough to be currently thinking of switching.
Anyway, I am sooo very sorry you have to go through this- it is such an emotional time, and trying to find a way to get through it financially, just makes it all that much harder.
I’ll keep you both in my prayers, and will keep my eyes open for emails detailing where donations can be made to.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask me.

Is there a central place we can donate to?

I think taking donations would be the quickest option. I would be willing to donate. I can't make it to the next couple of playgroups but would be willing to donate the $ I would pay if I were. I also have care credit and it is a huge help.

>Hi everyone...one of our big dog playgroup member's dog Bella broke her leg over the weekend.  The break is so bad it could not be set correctly.  Bella needs surgery to place 2 pins in her leg.  She has been quoted about $1300 for the surgery.  If anyone has been through this with their dog or if you have any info or suggestion please email me.  Money is tight and I am trying to work with her on ways to help with the cost so if anyone has suggestion it would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.  Tara
