• RFS September (Virtual)- Reviewing Code Fails 💻🔥

    ** ONLINE EVENT https://www.twitch.tv/rochesterfullstack **

Join us and our special guest reviewer Ian VanSchooten for a fun evening of code review! That's right, code review. We've all pulled in a choice piece of code from TheDailyWTF to share, scrutinize, question, and maybe even improve!

While there will be a fair bit of shade being throw, we'll also be talking about good programming habits and lessons to learn from these tragic examples of code.

So, if you're not doing anything Friday night, then grab a coffee or drink and settle in for some fun! We'll be monitoring the Twitch chat and encourage participation!

    **SPECIAL GUEST**
Ian VanSchooten is a front-end focused web developer in Ann Arbor and an organizer of SouthEast Michigan JavaScript (SEM.js). He's passionate about building experiences that users enjoy, writing quality code, and improving developer tooling to help others write quality code. He's a former core contributor to ESLint and the creator of ESLint-nibble, a tool to help introduce static analysis into existing projects. At home he has two boys who are finally old enough to play fun video games with him, two hives of honeybees who gave him 27 lbs of honey this year and only occationally sting the crap out of him, and 13 ducks—for some reason. He works at Duo Security writing JavaScipt & TypeScript (React), CSS, HTML, and Python.

  • RFS August - Virtual Beer Up 🍻📡

    Online event

    ** ONLINE EVENT https://www.twitch.tv/rochesterfullstack **

We're back! Our hiatus has made us miss not only the meet-ups, but our
post-meet-up discussions-- so we're taking that concept online via Twitch. The co-organizers will be gathering virtually to share stories, opinions, and maybe even wisdom on some-things tech. We'll want to hear your thoughts too via the Twitch chat channel.

    Topics
    1. Building Solutions: The triumph of "good enough"
    2. The Future of Remote Work: How has the pandemic changed companies' view of remote work
    3. Bug Tracking: The worst bug you've ever tracked

We haven't done a meet-up like this before, but if all goes well, we're hoping to invite other community members into future discussions!

  • 🚧✂️✨The Cutting Room Floor: Projects that didn't make it.

    ** ONLINE EVENT https://www.twitch.tv/rochesterfullstack **

Ever started a project based on what was "a great idea" but never followed through? Maybe it turned out to be a "not so great idea", or after a quick Google search you realized that the idea was being developed by a bunch of Silicon Valley seed-money startups?

Spencer Jobe has been tinkering and coding for many years. Most of his projects have fallen by the wayside. Join us April 14th at 7:00PM via Twitch as he shares some obscure and half-baked projects from the cutting room floor of years past. Video games, server software, JavaScript nonsense and more!

Please note, this is our first remote-only meetup, so be patient with us as we work through any technical difficulties.

We're gonna try a giveaway via Twitch chat too. You'll need a Twitch account to participate in the chat. So, make sure you've signed up and are logged in.

While we won't be sending food and drink to each attendee, we still want to give a shout out to all our sponsors below. They help make our meetup fun and fed!

  • 📱✨🧐 Augmented Reality with AR.js - by Peter Guenther

    Rochester Fire Department

📱✨ Augmented Reality, which overlays information or objects on a live, real-world view, has become very popular and offers a lot of exciting possibilities, but how do you create your own? Do you need to learn device-dependent libraries or tools like Unity and Vuforia?🤔

No, there's another way! 😃 With AR.js you can code efficient, effective Augmented Reality right in a web page! Peter will present case study and a step-by-step look at how to use the library through HTML and JavaScript. We'll dive a little into A-Frame, the web framework for virtual reality, to make our AR more interesting.

  • RFS January — Pipes, Tubes, and the Magic of the Internet

    Rochester Fire Department

How actually does the internet work? Eric Stevens will explore some history of the internet as well as the basic building blocks that help cat memes appear on your magic glowing computing machine. We'll also be exploring the evolving ways we connect our devices to services out in the cloud.

There will be some fun (maybe), food (for sure!), and prizes (giveaway time!). We hope to see you there 😃

As usual, we'll have a post-meeting analysis at Rochester Mills across the street.

  • Bend Text to Your Whim with Stripe's Henry Marshall

    Rochester Fire Department

    **Meeting on Monday**
Regular Expressions (regex) are a powerful pattern matching tool you can use for everything from find-and-replace, to input validation, to data extraction. Regex is one of the few programming skills you can learn today with the confidence you can use it in a decade. Best of all, regex are easy to learn -- “complex” searches are built out of the same handful of simple building blocks.

Please join us as Henry Marshall walks us through the basics of Regular Expressions so we can start writing our own and begin using them to supercharge our editors, batch rename files, and play a Regex crossword puzzle!

    --------------------------
Henry Marshall is a developer at Stripe where he primarily writes Ruby. As a side project he's written DeepSearch, a Chrome extension which enables Regex search on arbitrary web pages.
