Green Lecture Series: Our Toxic Stuff (Product testing workshop)

Back due to popular demand and just in time for the holidays!

OUR TOXIC STUFF (product testing workshop)

The holidays are coming! Have you wondered if the gifts you're giving to your loved ones are safe? Many children's products, pet toys, and everyday household items contain toxic chemicals like lead, arsenic, and cadmium. Join the Sierra Club Rochester ECOs group presenting Alexis Blizman, Legislative and Policy Director at the Ecology Center, who will briefly talk about the toxic chemicals common in consumer products, their health effects and ways to reduce your exposure. Alexis will dedicate most of the workshop time to do product testing. Please bring in any items you'd like tested for toxics, and she'll test them for free using the XRF device.

More info:

There are over 80,000 chemicals on the market and fewer than 200 have been tested for health and safety. Thousands of chemicals are used to make our stuff - our electronics, furniture, children's products and toys. Many of the chemicals that are in our stuff and kids' toys have been linked to cancer, infertility, developmental disorders, and a range of other negative health impairments.

The XRF device can detect toxic heavy metals, including lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury, in consumer products or children's toys. *We limit testing to 3 items/person while others are waiting.

Each month we bring an excellent speaker with a fresh topic, full of practical information. Discussion and questions are very welcome. Learn what you can do to protect our planet's water, land, air, and all its inhabitants!
