Announcing a new Meetup for Rock Climbers of Colorado Springs! What
: Low Angle Ice Skating : ) When
: Friday, December 17,[masked]:00 AMWhere
: Cheyenne Canon. Meet at Helen Hunt Falls parking area.
Anyone up for playing around on the low angle ice up in the Canyon? I'm headed up there to check it out on Friday. I know nothing about ice. But I'll have crampons, an axe, and a TR off a big pine tree. The idea is to get familiar with what could be encountered on an alpine route in winter - while in a safe environment. See required reading, below.
I'll go check it out - you guys can laugh at the pictures. I promise not to post any photos of bruises in personal areas.
Please bring harness, belay device, dry rope, slings, and clips. Please also bring crampons and either an ice axe or ice tools if you have them. We may be able to get a couple ropes going.
Please also note that I'm not instructing or guiding. The truth is, I've never been on water ice in my life except what I've inadvertently encountered on the occasional winter alpine route - hence my desire to get introduced to it. The event is intended for those interested in self-instruction with techniques described in FOTH, in an area where a top rope can be placed.Required reading:
Mountaineering: Freedom of the Hills ("FOTH") pp. [masked], "alpine ice climbing."
We'll meet at the Helen Hunt Falls parking area about 3/4 the way up Cheyenne Canon, at 9:00 am.
