New Meetup: Shelf Road Thursday

Announcing a new Meetup for Rock Climbers of Colorado Springs!

What: Shelf Road Thursday

When: Thursday, December 23,[masked]:00 AM

Where: (A location has not been chosen yet.)

The forecast is looking awesome for Thursday so let's sneak in another day of climbing before you all go out a wassailing. Shelf Road has excellent lines on solid limestone. The climbs are fun and challenging, as they tend to be quite vertical and sustained for their grades. The more advanced climbers will love the many climbs that go beyond vertical. Difficulty ranges from 5.5 to hard 5.13. No wonder this is such a popular place and our go-to winter destination!

Shelf is about an hour and a half drive from Colorado Springs. We will meet out in front of the Black Bear Coffee and Tea Lodge (6550 S. Academy Blvd., just west of Hwy 115) at 8:00 am to figure out carpooling. Show up a little early if you want to get your morning coffee; this is a great place for that. In addition to food and water for the day, please be sure to bring some cash to pitch in for gas, unless you are one of the fine souls offering your vehicle for carpooling. The gravel road to the parking lot can be rough and vehicles with very low clearance are not recommended.

Directions from the Black Bear: Hwy 115 south to Hwy 50. Go west on Hwy 50 to Canon City. Turn right onto Dozier St. (just past the Wal Mart) and continue as it curves left and becomes Central Ave. At the 4 way stop, turn right onto Field Ave. Continue past the schools and over the hill where Field merges with Fremont County 9. Eventually you will see the cliffs ahead. Look for the sign for the Bank; turn left onto the gravel road and continue to the parking lot, just past the Bank Campground. If you get close to the cliffs on the main road, you?ve gone too far. Please note: this drive is notorious for law enforcement handing out tickets; best to observe the speed limit at all times.
