What we're about

This group is for those who are interested in outdoor activities such as hiking, backpacking, canoeing, kayaking, camping, and any other outdoor activity that our members care to organize. We can have some indoor events for socializing and planning future activities. This group is free to join and no profit is to be made from hosting events. Donations will be accepted, but only to cover the cost of the group on Meetup. If you have ideas for events and would like to organize one, contact the Organizer. Your personal safety at Meetup Events is ultimately your responsibility. Please review Meetup's Terms of Service https://www.meetup.com/terms/ .

Backpack/Hike in the North Kettle Moraine State Forest

WisDOT Park & Ride 66-55

There are 3 options for this event. PLEASE let me know which option that you want, so I can adjust the attendance number, if needed. This is a 10.8 mile hike (ONE WAY) including 7.5 miles on the Ice Age Trail (from Butler Lake to Mauthe Lake). After that, we will hike on the Lake to Lake Bike Trail to the Zillmer Trail Area and camp at the Zillmer Shelter #6 (3.3 more miles). OPTION 1 : Participate in the intermediate level backpack, carrying all of your equipment and supplies the entire way (and back on Monday). If you are a beginner backpacker, please do option 2. OPTION 2: Leave a vehicle at the Zillmer Area Trails parking (requires parking fee) with your overnight backpack and supplies stored inside. Day hike with the group, picking up your backpack from your vehicle. It's a 0.9 mile hike to the shelter from there. At least you will get a chance to try out your gear without slowing down the group or exhausting yourself. OPTION 3: DAYHIKE ONLY. That's right, if you aren't into backpacking but would like to join us for a dayhike, that's alright by me. You can leave your vehicle at the Zillmer Area Trails parking and hike with the group for 9.9 miles, or to the shelter if you'd like. On Monday, the campers will be hiking either to their vehicles at the Zilmmer Area Trails parking (0.9 mi), or all the way back to Butler Lake (10.8 mi). Water sources: tap water from Mauthe Lake Recreation Area (3.3 miles from shelter), hand pump well water at Zillmer Area Trails (0.9 miles from shelter), or a small creek and springs right by the shelter. Fees: I've paid the $30.75 for the shelter already. If you are camping with us, be prepared to split the cost. For example, if one person camps with Kerry and I, it will be $10 each. If 8 people camp with Kerry and I (that's 10 total), it will be $3 each. PARKING FEES: $11/day for out of state plates - that's $22 for each vehicle. We'll meet at the park and ride to minimize the number of vehicles to park. Plan on splitting the cost. Please bring cash and include small bills.
