Return to Bear Swamp at The Ramapo Reservation!!

Let's enjoy some autumn reflections as we return to Bear Swamp at the Ramapo Res.! Burn some “pre-holiday calories” and enjoy a little peace in the woods.

This will be an approx 3 1/2 hour moderate paced somewhat CHALLENGING hike and is NOT FOR BEGINNERS. We'll be taking the Silver trail passing the  beautiful Scarlet Oak pond, waterfalls and streams, up to MacMillan Reservoir, the favorite "dog hangout" where we'll take a short break. From there we'll continue on the Orange trail, to the Red and silver, up to the scenic Bear Swamp surrounded by many wonderful ruins. After a scenic break overlooking the swamp and some exploring we'll retrace our steps  back.  Lets' head for the woods!!

There are some moderately STEEP, ROCKY INCLINES and the early portion of the hike is a fairly steady incline. Much of the trails will now be covered in leaves. Hiking boots or shoes are recommended as are walking poles. Water is a Must, snacks, bugspray and cameras of course! Don';t forget to dress in layers as the weather can change quickly now.

Carpooling can be helpful so please make your own arrangements if you choose to do so. There is another lot at the Soldiers Continental Park(where Field of Creams is located) just north of the Ramapo Res at 550 Ramapo Valley Rd. and across from Ramapo College. YOu could also carpool from Ramapo College or the A & P lot at 117 Franklin Trnpk, in Mahwah just a short drive from the park.

Meet by the start of the paved path, lined with boulders. Inclement weather cancels, so always check the day of an event for any changes.

Optional dinner at Elises’ pick, Zaytoons with fabulous Middleastern fare just a few minutes drive from the park located at the A & P shopping center located at 115 Frankliln Turnpike in Mahwah, NJ(depending upon availability or another venue)  at about 4:15 pm. Available for the first 20 to RSVP for dinner.  Liquor is not served, it is bring your own if you are interested.  Individual checks are available!  Cash is always appreciated. Please let me know if you would be interested in joining us. Check out their dinner menu at http://www.zaytoonmahwah.com/

The sun helped warm us on this beautiful brisk Nov. day hike. Thanks to all who helped make it happen. A special thanks to Larry for the special “history tour”, Leo for lending a hand where needed, Madeline, Adrienne, Larry and Rhoda for volunteering to sweep, Elise for helping to arrange our dinner and to our wonderful photographers who add so much to these events!

Not feeling 100% so it's best I not attempt a super-challenging hike. I will CERTAINLY be meeting up with you at Zaytoon for dinner, though! Susan, Jerry, Leo and Carey.... I'm counting on you for photos!
