Programming for Kids

Budding programmers: drag your parents out on Saturday, Sept 21 for the first 7hills Makerspace Meetup on coding for kids!  We'll explore all the great new tools that exist to introduce kids to the art and science of programming.

The focus of this Meetup will be on Scratch, a project that grew out of MIT (, but we will also touch on how Scratch can be interfaced with hardware (using the Picoboard,, as well as other emerging platforms. With these tools, kids as young as 10 (maybe even younger!) can start creating their own games, apps and who-knows-what-else.

We ask that parents attend with their kids. If they bring a laptop, we can help them access Scratch to get started.

Parents and kids who are interested need to RSVP below. We will send a note out within a couple of days of the Meetup to let you know if we got the 10 RSVPs we needed to make it worthwhile.

Thanks so much to the parents, children and volunteers for making Saturday's Meetup such a success! I hope everyone enjoyed the class.

We will have another Meetup in about a month. where the kids can come back and share with us what they've learned and created. In addition to seeing what their friends have come up with, we'll have a little contest for the kids to vote on their favorite game, animation or whatever from the group.

A link to the Scratch site is The kids can also find lots of great learning resources, video tutorials and other helpful items at

The board game that Tricia showed can be found at

Please come visit on Thursday night Make-Nights at the space whenever you can. We usually start around 6pm. It's a great chance to keep up to date, get involved, and check in on progress.

Such a great setting and set up. It is awesome that we can offer this kind of education to our up and coming generation with out having to travel out of Rome.

If another spot opens up, please let me know. I have 2 children who would like to attend, but there was only 1 spot left.

Actually I only have one son, coming but the RSVP says 3 people instead of 2, so there is probably space.
