What we're about
Join us for lunch!
Rotary Club of Hamilton Mountain and Rotary International.
You may not know it, but there is a volunteer charity service organization that is doing wonderful things for you and your world, each and every day! Have you ever heard of Rotary? Of course you have! But you may not know what it is; you may not know what it’s all about; and you may not even know how it affects you; but once you’ve read this, you know you’ll want to join in all the good works and all the fun…
When We Meet? Let me start with telling you about Rotary locally. In Hamilton, Ontario, there are 12 Rotary Clubs, including the Rotary Club of Hamilton Mountain. We meet on Mondays at Noon at the Fortinos meeting room most Mondays and the Mandarin Restaurant in the plaza on Upper James Street near Rymal Road usually on the last Monday of the month. Our lunch meeting is 1 hour and 10 minutes, and we usually have a different guest speaker at each meeting who will talk to us for about 15 minutes on a variety of topics each week. It makes for a very interesting luncheon meeting.
So What is Our Rotary Club and What Has it Done? Well, Rotary is made up of a group of people, just like you and me, who have decided to come together and volunteer their time to good causes locally, nationally, and internationally. It all started with this guy named Paul Harris who was a lawyer in Chicago in the early 1900s. He and a few other people thought they would get together and raise some funds to put in a public restroom for their community, and so they started meeting by ‘rotating’ each week around to each of their offices. Thus the word “Rotary” was born for this group. And after they were born, boy, did they ever grow! Rotary has been around now for over a hundred years, and there are tens of thousands Rotary Clubs all over the world! Yes, you may not know it, but there is a volunteer charity service organization that is doing wonderful things for you and your world, each and every day!
Now I’ll tell you more about our Rotary Club right here in your home town! The Rotary Club of Hamilton Mountain has done such things as raising funds for, and being involved with, Marydale Park on Hamilton Mountain, Wheelchair Foundation of Canada, T.E.A.D. (equestrian horse riding for disabled children), George L. Armstrong Snoezelen Room, Neighbour to Neighbour, City Kidz, Interval House, Hamilton Challenger Baseball Association, Catholic Youth Organization, Liberty for Youth, needy families at Christmas, Ronald McDonald House, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Telling Tales Youth Literacy Initiative, Easter Seals Summer Camp, Kidfest, Food Share, Hamilton Children’s Aid Society Kids Summer Camp, just to name a few. As well, we are involved with RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards), Rotary Youth Exchange programs, and Polio eradication through the Rotary Foundation, our International Charitable Fund.
We have also been involved in raising funds for earthquake relief in Japan and Italy and other disaster areas around the world, flood relief in Canada and the U.S., digging clean water wells in Haiti, polio eradication in different places all over the world including African countries, and the list goes on.
Some of the members of our Hamilton Mountain Rotary Club include: a retired Chief of Police, a property developer and builder, several lawyers, accountants, a funeral director, a tailor, an insurance broker, an investment adviser, a mechanic, an auto dealer, a banker, a realtor, and many, many more people from different walks of life. All of these different people bring different perspectives to our meetings, and different focuses for our charity works, and it makes for a whole lot of fun when we meet and have events!
Now lets look at some of the things that makes Rotary so fascinating from an international perspective. With over 34,000 Clubs and over 1.2 million members, you can go to any Club anywhere around the world, and be welcome as a fellow Rotarian! Wow! It’s that neat! Believe me, I’ve experienced it! When you attend another Club, you are made to feel very welcome; after all its one big fellowship of like minded people…making our World a better place to live.
Remember the Rotary motto “Service above Self”; well this also happens to apply to ‘fellowship’ when we meet other Rotarians no matter where they’re from! and we treat them as we would like to be treated, and even more so, because we know that they have the same principles and values as we do: “Service above Self”! Yes, you may not know it, but there is a volunteer charity service organization that is doing wonderful things for you and your world, each and every day!
