Nothing major, nothing official, just camaraderie, allyship, and correct pronouns!
This is a brand new meetup, looking to organise pub nights, meals out, coffee shops, board games, film nights - anything that gives the opportunity to meet up and connect with LGBT+ people in Rugby, and get support, advice, friendship. Anyone welcome, including intersex people, trans and nonbinary people, asexual people, and people who are questioning their gender or sexuality. We just ask that everyone respects each other and their identities :)
In the recent survey (linked below) by Warwickshire Pride of services for LGBT+ people in Rugby, almost 50% of participants had experienced hate due to their LGBT+ identity. This is well over double the national average. It ain't on!
So here's a chance to find out that there *are* other LGBT+ people in Rugby, and we *can* make this town a welcome and tolerant and inclusive place!
Cisgender or straight allies are also welcome to join - obviously this meetup is totally new, so things might grow and change, but for now it's best to keep it nice and open and not gatekeep on identities. People might want to bring non-LGBT+partners or friends, and we've had a few proud parents interested in attending and getting support and friendship - that's all fine. So long as everyone is respectful and recognises that the meetup is there for the LGBT+ folks then we're all good :)
If members want to organise events that are kept just LGBT+ (or even just trans, or just bi, or whatever) and that's all cool too - we totally respect that people might need spaces like that, and ask that other members respect that too.
Finally, remember that some people may not be 'out' at home, with friends, at work, or in other environments. Please don't out people without their permission. Also, if someone is trying out new pronouns or otherwise exploring their gender/sexuality, it's worth checking whether they want those things kept within the group until they're more sure.
