Topic 1: The Automotive CAN bus: Everything You Wanted to Know But Were Afraid To Ask
Dave Robins from Intrepid Control Systems will give a full introduction and demonstration of automotive CAN. The presentation for CAN will start with the OBD port, talk about whats on it (CAN), talk about what CAN is, show some CAN tools (Software and Hardware), show how CAN encodes data, the different types of CAN data, a basic reverse engineering technique, basic cybersecurity issues with CAN today, solutions for cybersecurity that are coming, and alternatives to CAN in the future.
Dave Robins is the president and founder of Intrepid Control Systems - a global provider of automotive related test products for over 21 years. Dave is an expert in CAN and other vehicle networking technologies. Intrepid's tools are used in over 80,000 engineering applications worldwide. Intrepid's solutions are a key enabler for OEMs working on autonomous, electrification, cyber-security and connectivity applications.
Topic 2: U.S Government Contract Opportunities
Patti Kreh of SAE will introduce a new mechanism to acquire U.S. government contracts related to transportation and mobility. In September 2016, SAE created the Defense Automotive Technologies Consortium (DATC), http://datc.saeitc.org. Through this consortium agencies of the U.S. government can quickly procure up to $700 million in contracts related to research, development and prototyping in the following areas:
• Automotive Cybersecurity
• Vehicle Safety Technologies
• Vehicle Light Weighting
• Autonomous Vehicles and Intelligent Systems
• Connected Vehicles
• Advanced Energy Storage Technologies
I STRONGLY encourage you to invite your company leadership to attend this very important meeting. They will want to hear this and join DATC.
Topic 3: Workforce Development
Kevin Perry scours the globe talking to heads of engineering and HR about their workforce needs, gaps and challenges. In this presentation, Kevin will share what automotive companies are looking for in this rapidly evolving industry.
J. Kevin Perry, Ed.D.
Kevin Perry is the Director of SAE International’s Professional Development division, a position he has held since 2001. In this capacity, he leads a staff that plans and delivers seminars, in-company training, and a variety of multimedia/distance learning products for engineers who serve the automotive, aerospace, and commercial vehicle industries. In 2014, Dr. Perry assumed management of Effective Training, Inc., a training firm that SAE acquired, which focuses on geometric dimensioning and tolerancing training products. Also in 2014, he opened Probitas Authentication, a new SAE business that certifies aerospace auditors and training providers. In 2015, he led an effort to acquire the aerospace auditor and training provider business from the principal competitor to Probitas.
Prior to his role as Director, he worked as a Program Developer where he developed SAE’s Engineering Academy format, which earned the Award of Excellence from the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE).
Before joining SAE, Dr. Perry worked in the continuing higher education field for nearly 12 years at both Penn State University and Duquesne University where he held positions as program developer, administrator, and marketing director. His educational credentials include a B.S. in Education and M.Ed. in Counselor Education from Penn State University, and Ed.D. in Administrative and Policy Studies from University of Pittsburgh.
His service work includes Board of Regents member for Baker College’s Graduate School and Online College, Governing Board Vice-Chair of the Michigan Academy for Green Mobility Alliance, and Education and Training Track Committee member for the Council of Engineering and Scientific Society Executives (CESSE). In 2014, he was elected to the Board of Directors of the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET).
Food and Beverage will be provided, and as usual, you will have the opportunity to try the BMW driving simulator.
Refunds are not offered for this Meetup.
